The Most Controversial Buck of All Time

Back in 2006, Wisconsin hunter Johnny King tagged what many believe is the largest typical whitetail buck ever taken. The rack scored an unbelievable 217 5/8 inches gross, and when word spread, hunters across the country were calling it the new world record. But controversy hit when the Boone and Crockett Club ruled the buck couldn’t be scored as a “typical” due to one tine on the right antler being classified as non-typical. That single call knocked it out of contention for the top spot, sparking a debate that’s still going strong nearly two decades later.

Many hunters argue the King Buck should have dethroned the Milo Hanson Buck (213 5/8, taken in 1993) as the world record. Photos and measurements suggest a frame that’s as clean and symmetrical as they come, with just that one questionable point deciding its fate. Whether you side with Boone and Crockett or believe Johnny King was robbed of a rightful record, one thing’s for sure, this deer remains the most talked-about and debated trophy in whitetail history.
