🌼 Infusing Arnica flowers in jojoba oil. Over the next few weeks, the plant’s natural compounds will release into the oil, creating a powerful base for our “Break From The Ache” Salve ☀️

Arnica has been traditionally used to ease sore muscles, bruises, and everyday aches. This is one of my favorite ways to let the plants do the work—slow and steady healing in a jar. 💛✨

You might have heard that yarrow takes its name Achillea from the Greek hero Achilles, who used yarrow for the wounds of his friends on the battlefield.

Judging by its common names—soldiers’ woundwort, staunch w**d, nosebleed, woundwort, and carpenter’s w**d—Achilles isn’t the only one who has used yarrow for wounds throughout history.

Additionally, in the Native American pharmacopeia, the Bella Coola have used it for boils, the Cherokee for piles, the Cheyenne as a hemostatic, the Crow as a burn dressing, the Kutenai and Lakota for wounds and sores, the Menominee for swellings, sores, and rashes, and the Paiute for swellings, sores, and cuts.

Happy ! 🍹

Obviously, we HAVE to celebrate this day with a refreshing tea!

But, before we share a recipe, did you know that herbs can cool us in many ways beyond temperature? Besides the cooling effect of foods, fruits, and drinks that are colder than our body’s temperature, there are other ways herbs can decrease our heat.

Ways that herbs cool

🌿Diaphoretics, like cayenne, yarrow, and elderflower, can stimulate sweating which is one of our body’s natural ways to release heat.

🌿Astringent herbs, such as rose and raspberry leaf, are cooling and drying which can offset heat accumulated in the body.

Okay, we know we’ve made you wait long enough, here is the recipe!

HIBISCUS HERBAL COOLER

🌺¼ cup dried hibiscus
🌺¼ cup dried chamomile
🌺2 tablespoons dried rosehips
🌺1 tablespoon dried cinnamon chips
Directions
🌺Blend herbs together in a ½ gallon jar.
🌺Pour boiling water over herbs and let steep for 30 minutes.
🌺Add honey to sweeten, if desired, shake well, and chill in refrigerator. Enjoy!

While tart hibiscus is traditionally made into an iced tea in Jamaica, the addition of chamomile and cinnamon add a bit of sweetness as well as mild sedative properties that can help to further relax us on long summer days, especially if heat is causing agitation.

Been adding a lot of burdock root and nettle to my morning routine! And of course a daily spoonful of elderberry syrup! They are great herbs😊🌿🍇

ELDERBERRY + NETTLE + BURDOCK + WILD BERGAMOT
IMMUNE SUPPORTIVE FRIENDS TO SAVE THE DAY!

Have you been sneezing and coughing and blowing your nose? I think, as much as it’s unappealing, that a seasonal sickness only makes us stronger. The goal is to support our own bodies’ self-healing capacities by resting well, eating nourishing food and consuming supportive herbs.

The supportive herbs of the moment are an herbal infusion of elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), nettle leaf (Urtica dioica), burdock root (Arctium minor) and calendula blossom (Calendula officinalis) with pinches of marshmallow root (Althea officinalis), licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and fennel seeds.

I take a large handful of this herbal mix, place in a quart mason jar, fill the jar with boiling water, cap the jar, let steep for 4 hours, then strain and drink 2-3 cups (warmed) a day.

The wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) I take as a tincture along with hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis), goldenrod (Solidago sp.) and a touch of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra); approx. ½ teaspoon of this mixture 3-5 times a day.

Are you using herbs right now to support your health while passing through a cold or flu? If yes, what herbs are you using?
