The reason you feel good after a massage has much more to do with the nervous system than it does with your muscles.

When you’re constantly living in a “fight or flight” state massage therapists would look at that as a high sympathetic tone of the autonomic nervous system.

Sympathetic nervous system = fight/flight
Parasympathetic nervous system = restorative rest and digest

A healthy human body maintains an equilibrium of the these two states.

Dysfunction shows up as a too much tone in either state.

The goal of medical massage therapy is to restore the balance between these forces by selecting the correct treatment plan.

This is why you need to be assessed when dealing with complex & chronic pain conditions.
