February is Macular Degeneration Awareness Month!
Did you know that Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in Americans over the age of 60?
So what is Macular Degeneration (AMD)? It is an eye disease that specifically affects the macula. The macula is responsible for our central (straight-on) vision that pertains to our ability to read, drive, and recognize faces. It is the leading cause of vision loss in Americans over the age of 55.
There are two forms of AMD: Dry and Wet
Dry AMD is the gradual deterioration of the macula due to protein deposits called drusen in the macula, thus impairing the vision.
Wet AMD is when new, abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina, leaking fluid and blood that damage the macula. This causes severe vision loss, and if gone untreated, then blindness.
Symptoms of AMD include, but are not limited to:
Blurry vision
Straight lines or straight objects looking wavy
Needing more light to see
Decreased color intensity
Risk Factors Include:
Poor diet, high in saturated fats
Smoking
Overweight
Family history of AMD
Hypertension
Over the age of 50
Though there is no cure for AMD, it is very treatable and early detection is key.
