Last evening, I had the pleasure to join the Grandparents Group to speak about the importance of therapy and caring for our mental health following loss. It was truly an honor to be invited to speak with the group and share my experience as both a loss Mom and a licensed clinical social worker.
I left last evening feeling uplifted by the level of care and thoughtfulness that these grandmothers put into remembering their grandbabies and also into their interactions and the ways they support their children. All losses come with their own complexities, but hearing these ladies share about the struggle of grieving the loss of their grandbaby while also being devastated for and trying to support their child reminded me of the often unseen and unrecognized struggles of grief.
As a loss Mom, I was touched by their efforts, their thoughtful questions, and genuine desire to do the best they can to support their children. It was a quiet reminder that there are people in this world who want to help and support us, if only we take the time to listen and guide them as to how we wish to be supported.
The Grandparents Group meets at the greenhouse in Patchogue on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Grandmothers and grandfathers who have experienced a loss are welcome to join at any time to remember their grandbabies gone too soon and provide support to one another.
Thank you to and for the always present support and providing the most beautiful garden for a support group that I have ever seen.
