Thank you, Port Jervis. 🕊️

WOW — when I saw Rachel had shared yesterday’s post to Port Jervis Whatnots, my stomach dropped. If you’ve spent any time in that group, If you know, you know. I braced myself. And then I started reading the comments.
I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy to be wrong. The kindness, the stories about George and Bob, the memories people shared about loved ones we’ve cared for, the welcomes from folks I’ve never even met — it was something else. I read every single comment. Some of them more than once.
To Rachel — thank you for sharing it. To everyone who commented, messaged, or quietly hit the like button — thank you. And to the 80+ new neighbors who joined the page yesterday — welcome. We promise not to clog up your feed with noise. Just a steady, respectful presence in a town that deserves one. George & Bob set the bar. We’re just trying to keep it there.

Thanks,

Michael

Meet the Owner 🕊️

Some of you know me, and some of you don’t — so I figured it was time to say hello properly.

My name is Michael Collins Horkan and I’ve had the honor of owning Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home for the past four years.

I grew up just down the road in Cornwall, attended Burke Catholic, and knew by the time I graduated that funeral service was the calling I wanted to follow. I went on to the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City, and became a licensed funeral director in 2001.
For more than two decades, I’ve had the privilege of walking with families through some of the hardest days of their lives. When the opportunity came to take on Knight-Auchmoody — a funeral home with deep roots and a reputation built over generations in Port Jervis — I knew it was something I wanted to give my whole heart to.

I didn’t grow up in Port Jervis, but Orange County has always been home. And these last four years, this town has shown me exactly why families here have trusted Knight-Auchmoody for so long. The strength, the faith, the way neighbors show up for each other — it’s the real thing.

I’m grateful to the families who’ve trusted us, to the staff who carry this work with such care, and to a community that has welcomed me with more kindness than I could have asked for.

Thank you, Port Jervis. It’s a privilege to serve you.

Tip Tuesday đź’¬

“What do I even say?”
It’s the question we hear most often from folks heading to a wake or calling hours. Nobody wants to say the wrong thing — so sometimes people stay away, and that hurts the family more than they know.
Here’s the truth: you don’t need the perfect words. Just showing up matters.
A few simple things that always land right:
• “I’m so sorry for your loss.”
• “I have such a good memory of [their loved one]…” — then share it
• “I’m thinking of your whole family.”
• A hand on the shoulder. A hug. Sometimes nothing at all.
What to skip: “They’re in a better place,” “everything happens for a reason,” or “I know how you feel.” Even when meant kindly, those can sting.
If you’re on the fence about going to a service this week — go. Sign the book. Shake a hand. It means more than you’ll ever realize.
