We had a great morning presenting at the Goshen Chamber of Commerce at The Castle Fun Center about Victory Hill’s programs and an exciting new project with Clear Path for Veterans!! We also learned some great disaster preparedness tips from our friends at ServPro of Orange, Sullivan, and S. Ulster.

A little story that speaks to why we do what we do! We rescue horses who heal the people and every single day is amazing!

The state gave me thirty days to break an "aggressive" two-ton draft horse or he’d be put down. Then, a furious fifteen-year-old orphan walked into my barn.

"He’s going to kill you, old man," the animal control officer sneered, slamming the heavy iron gate of the stall. Inside, Goliath was rearing up, his massive hooves striking the wood with the force of a wrecking ball.

I didn't flinch. I just leaned heavier on my aluminum walking cane, adjusting the prosthetic leg attached below my left knee. "He's not aggressive," I replied quietly. "He's just terrified. And so am I."

Goliath was a Percheron draft horse, completely blind in his left eye and covered in whip scars from a negligent former owner. He had already thrown two professional trainers, breaking the collarbone of one. The county animal shelter deemed him a public danger.

They gave him thirty days. If he couldn't be ridden or handled by then, he was scheduled to be euthanized.

I had lost my leg twenty years ago in an overseas military deployment. When I came back, the world looked at me like I was broken, fragile, and useless. I saw the exact same look in Goliath’s wildly rolling eyes.

Right as the officer drove away, a rusted county van pulled up the dirt driveway. A social worker stepped out, dragging a scowling teenager by the sleeve of his oversized hoodie.

His name was Marcus. Fifteen years old, bouncing between foster homes since he was a toddler, and recently caught vandalizing a local grocery store. The family court judge gave him a choice: juvenile detention or two hundred hours of hard labor at my sanctuary for rejected animals.

Marcus took one look at me, then glared at the massive, thrashing horse in the stall. "I'm not shoveling crap for a cripple and a dead horse," he spat.

I didn't yell. I just tossed him a pitchfork. "Good. Because you're not here to shovel. You're here to listen."

The first week was a nightmare. Marcus refused to speak. He did the bare minimum, dragging his feet and glaring at the world.

Meanwhile, Goliath wouldn't let anyone within ten feet of him. If I approached with a halter, he would bare his teeth and pin his ears back, ready to fight for his life.

But animals know things humans don't. They sense the energy you carry inside.

One rainy Tuesday, Marcus was sitting on an overturned bucket outside Goliath’s stall. The kid was supposed to be cleaning tack, but instead, he was just staring at the floor, crying silently. He thought I was in the house.

Suddenly, the violent thrashing inside the stall stopped.

I watched from the shadows of the tack room as Goliath, the two-ton "monster," slowly walked over to the heavy iron gate. The giant horse lowered his massive, scarred head right down to Marcus's level.

Marcus froze. He wiped his face, terrified the horse would bite him.

Instead, Goliath closed his eyes and gently pushed his velvet nose against the boy's trembling shoulder. He let out a long, soft breath. It was the deepest sign of surrender a horse can give.

Marcus slowly reached up and placed his hand on the horse's white-starred forehead. "They think you're bad, huh?" the boy whispered, his voice cracking. "They think I'm bad, too."

That was the turning point. I realized I wasn't the one who was going to save Goliath. Marcus was.

I threw out the traditional training manuals. I stopped trying to force the horse to submit. Instead, I taught Marcus how to communicate through body language, respect, and quiet patience.

The boy who hated rules suddenly became the most disciplined student I ever had. He spent hours just sitting in the dirt with Goliath, reading his school books aloud so the horse would get used to his voice.

By day twenty, Marcus was brushing Goliath’s coat until it shined like polished obsidian.

By day twenty-five, Goliath was following Marcus around the pasture like a giant, two-ton puppy, completely loose and without a lead rope.

The county inspector came back on day thirty. He brought a clipboard and a cynical attitude, fully expecting to write the euthanasia order.

He stood by the fence, tapping his pen. "Alright, let's see this miracle. Put a saddle on him."

I smiled and pointed to the far end of the pasture. "We don't need a saddle."

The inspector's jaw dropped.

Walking over the crest of the hill was Goliath. He wasn't wearing a bit, a bridle, or a saddle. He was walking with his head held high, his gait smooth and proud.

And sitting ba****ck atop the massive draft horse, holding nothing but a fistful of mane, was Marcus. The boy was beaming, sitting tall and completely unafraid.

Goliath stopped right in front of the inspector and let out a gentle snort. He was perfectly calm, perfectly safe, and completely unbroken.

The inspector slowly lowered his clipboard. He didn't say a word. He just signed the clearance paper, handed it to me, and walked back to his truck.

That was five years ago.

Today, my farm isn't just a sanctuary for animals anymore. It's a fully funded equine therapy center for at-risk youth.

I'm getting older, and my remaining leg isn't as strong as it used to be. But the sanctuary is in the best hands possible.

Marcus is twenty years old now. He’s my full-time ranch manager, and he’s legally adopting a little brother from the foster system next month.

And Goliath? He's the lead therapy horse. Every weekend, he gently carries nervous, broken kids on his broad back, showing them that being scarred doesn't mean you're unlovable.

Society looked at an amputee, an aggressive horse, and a juvenile delinquent, and saw three problems that needed to be thrown away.

They were wrong. We just needed to find each other to remember how to heal.

💖🐴 THANK YOU for Feeling the Love at Victory Hill! 🐴💖

Our Feel the Love Valentine’s Day campaign was SO much fun, and our hearts (and barn!) are so full. Thank you to everyone who purchased a heart, shared a message, and dedicated one of our amazing animals as their Valentine. Seeing the barn filled with heartfelt notes, names, and love for our horses and animals was truly special.

Each heart represents kindness, connection, and support for the mission of Victory Hill—and your generosity helps us continue caring for the animals who give so much to our community every single day.

Take a look at the photos below to see the beautiful hearts displayed in the barn and the animals who were lucky enough to be someone’s Valentine 💕 Thank you for showing our herd just how loved they are!

The barn is brightening up! 💖

It has been so moving to see the hearts filling up our walls, each one a glowing reminder of the incredible community behind us.

But we aren't done yet—help us continue our quest to cover the barn in love! 🐴💕

We are so close to our goal! We are just $155 away from reaching our $750 target. Won't you consider helping us bridge that gap?

At Victory Hill, love is what warms the barn—no matter how cold it gets outside. For just $10, you can join the display and help us reach the finish line. Your gift provides the essential "fuel" for our mission—from hay and farrier visits for our rescue horses to the life-changing programs we provide for veterans, first responders, and children with special needs.

Help us add more hearts to our walls:

🌸 Add Your Heart ($10): We’ll hand-write your name on a physical heart and add it to our growing display.
🌸 Honor Your Favorites: Dedicate your heart to a special horse, a family member, or a friend.
🌸 Make an Impact: Your small gift ensures our mission stays strong and our horses stay healthy.
