If you're experiencing mental health challenges resulting from trauma, such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and others, often struggle with staying present in the moment. Mindfulness can aid in the development of specific regions of the brain, namely the cortex, which play a crucial role in decision-making and emotional regulation.
The Wheel of Awareness is a mindfulness practice developed by Dr. Dan Siegel. It is a visual metaphor representing integrating different aspects of human experience and cultivating present-moment awareness.
The wheel consists of the hub and the rim. The hub represents the center of awareness, the source of our ability to be present and observe our inner and outer experiences. The rim symbolizes the various aspects of our experience that we can direct our attention towards.
The rim of the wheel is divided into different segments: sensations, thoughts, emotions, memories, intentions, and awareness itself. Each segment represents a distinct focus of attention. As we move our attention around the rim, we explore and integrate the diverse dimensions of our experience.
How to practice:
1๏ธโฃSettle into a comfortable position: Find a quiet space where you can sit or lie down without distractions. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax.
2๏ธโฃVisualize the wheel: Imagine a wheel in your mind's eye, with the hub in the center and the rim divided into segments.
3๏ธโฃExplore the segments: Begin by directing your attention to one segment at a time. For example, you can start with sensations by bringing awareness to the physical sensations in your body. Notice any tension, warmth, or other sensations.
4๏ธโฃMove around the wheel: Slowly move your attention from one segment to another, spending a few moments on each. Observe your thoughts, emotions, memories, intentions, and overall awareness itself.
5๏ธโฃEmbrace the center: After exploring the various segments, return your attention to the hubโthe space of open awareness itself. Rest in this center, experiencing a sense of connection and unity.
