With record temperatures about to hit Washington, it’s important to keep cool- especially when pregnant! We have come up with a few tips to help keep you cool.
1. Stay hydrated- carry a water bottle with you at all times. Add ice to help keep your drink cool. It’s also important to add in some electrolytes! Nuun tablets or coconut water are our go-to options.
2. Eat refreshing foods- fruits, such as watermelon or berries, and vegetables, such as cucumbers and peas are higher in water content and can be refreshing- especially when served cold! Cold soups and salads are great meal options. Don’t forget about popsicles!
3. Carry a Mister- a mister or even a regular spray bottle can be helpful in keeping cool. Add ice for a more refreshing option.
4. Go somewhere cool- while COVID protocols are still being followed, many places have opened back up. Go see a movie, walk the mall, or visit a museum this weekend. These indoor places have air conditioning as an added bonus!
5. Take a shower- take a cool shower or bath if you feel you need to cool off at home. Luke warm water can feel refreshing on a hot day.
6. Dress accordingly- dress in light, loose clothing to help prevent overheating.
7. Use sun protection- be sure to wear sunscreen and a hat to help protect your skin!
8. Go for a swim- Here in Washington, we have many options for swimming! Freshwater lakes, beaches, or local pools are great options for cooling off.
Whatever you choose to do this weekend, keep an eye out for warning signs of heat exhaustion such as rapid pulse, profuse sweating, feeling faint and clammy, and nausea/ vomiting. For signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately. These include throbbing headache, increased temperature, lack of sweating, and more severely lack of consciousness.
Lastly, page your midwives with any urgent concerns!
