On December 31, 1862 — “Freedom’s Eve” - Enslaved African Americans gathered in churches and homes in anticipation of the Emancipation Proclamation being signed into law by President Abraham.

They prayed the night through waiting to see if freedom would truly come. If their dream would become reality.

The Nation of Israel waited 400 hundred years, then God said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people…and I am come down to deliver them.” African Americans endured hardship under American slavery for nearly 250 before this night came.

So just as the Jews’ Passover commemorates God’s miraculous rescue for them from Egypt, Watch Night has become a commemorative declaration that God sees the marginalized and rescues them from oppression. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

This historical moment, January 1, 1863, is pivotal for the black community and why Watch Night is so deeply embedded in the Black church.

Today, however, it is not a celebration of blackness, but a celebration of hope, redemption, freedom. It is a reminder that no matter how dark the night seems, heaven is home to a faithful and Mighty God, who can turn your “mourning into dancing and your sorrow into joy.”

Join us tonight to celebrate Jesus Christ and remind ourselves that each New Year’s Eve symbolizes the hope of a fresh start and a powerful move of God in our lives!!!
