Plaquemines Medical Center, in collaboration with the Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN) and the University Medical Center (UMC) Trauma Team, recently hosted a Rural Trauma Development Course aimed at enhancing trauma care in rural communities.
This one-day, interactive course focused on teaching participants how to apply a systematic team approach to trauma care—from initial assessment through resuscitation and patient transfer. The training emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, especially in rural settings where resources may be limited.
Participants included representatives from Plaquemines Parish Government, local fire departments, and Plaquemines Medical Center staff, all of whom engaged in hands-on learning and team-building exercises. The course fostered positive relationships among agencies and encouraged open communication to improve coordination in trauma response.
Plaquemines Medical Center is hopeful that this experience will strengthen partnerships and enhance communication among all organizations involved in trauma care, ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients across the region.

Plaquemines Medical Center recently hosted a vibrant Senior Citizen’s Field Day in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, bringing together seniors, staff, and community partners for a day filled with fun, inspiration, and heartfelt moments.
Participants enjoyed a variety of games including musical chairs, fast feet, connect four, and the crowd favorite—hallway hockey. Laughter and friendly competition filled the air as seniors showcased their energy and enthusiasm.
A highlight of the day was the sharing of inspirational stories by three breast cancer survivors, who were honored with special gifts in recognition of their strength and resilience. Their journeys touched everyone in attendance and served as a powerful reminder of hope and perseverance.
PMC staff kept spirits high and stomachs full by grilling hot dogs and burgers for lunch, while community partners Aetna and the Prominent Youth Foundation sweetened the day with treats for all.
The event was a beautiful celebration of life, community, and awareness—and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
