These beautiful autumn days are a reminder that it’s time to prepare for winter days ahead – including possible storms and power outages. Here is a brief list of actions we can take to ensure our comfort and safety this winter.
• Stay Informed - There are many ways to stay abreast of emergency conditions when they occur in our community. Sign up for NIXLE emergency alerts on your cell phone by texting your ZIP code to 888777. Tune to local radio KPTZ - 91.9 FM for vital information from the Jefferson County Emergency Operations Center.
• Stay Healthy - Refill medical prescriptions and make sure you have at least a 2-week supply of medicine and medical supplies on hand.
• Prepare for Power Outages - make sure your cellphones and other important electrical devices are fully charged. Keep flashlights within reach near your bed and other common living spaces. Keep fresh batteries in a familiar place. If you use oxygen, talk to your oxygen supply company about back-up emergency supplies that do not require electricity such as oxygen tanks and cylinders. Make sure you know how to set up and use your back up emergency oxygen supply.
• Stay Warm - Keep spare blankets and warm clothing easily accessible – include mittens, scarves, and hats.
• Keep Nourished - Make sure your kitchen is stocked with nonperishable food and bottled water.
• Stay Safe - Check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are working properly. If you cannot safely reach your smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, reach out to East Jefferson Co. Fire Rescue at (360)385-2626. They will be happy and honored to help you.
• Pets are People Too – Maintain an emergency supply of pet food and medications.
• Stay Connected – During an emergency, reach out to friends and family for comfort and the reassurance that you are not alone.
• Call Peninsula Homecare Cooperative if you need assistance preparing your home for winter. 360-385-9664
In our windy, seaside community, it's safe to assume that the lights will go out this winter. Plan ahead and be prepared!

Now is the time to begin a career in caregiving!

What’s the Urgency? For the first time in recorded history the old outnumber the young. In fact, the fastest growing demographic is 65 years and older. Consequently, our nation is experiencing a perilous shortage of caregivers – simply put, there are not enough caregivers to meet the growing needs of the nation’s rapidly aging population. This shortage is felt deeply here at home in Jefferson County – the oldest county in the state and fifth oldest in the nation.

Job Security: The need for caregivers will only increase with time. It is estimated the U.S. will need 2 million new professional caregivers every year to keep up with the growing demand.

The Cooperative Advantage: The caregiver-owned model for home care agencies provides dignified, exciting and sustainable careers. At Peninsula Homecare, caregivers own the business. We set policy and make decisions for the best possible care of our clients, and without corporate overhead, we share generous profits.
