Honoring and remembering our history.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, or Emancipation Day, is a holiday celebrated on June 19th. It commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Specifically, it marks the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, which declared that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

Juneteenth has since become a significant cultural and historical celebration, especially within the African American community. It is a time for reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and achievements. Festivities often include parades, concerts, family gatherings, and educational events. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.
