If you're preparing for surgery, you probably have questions about what the experience will be like and how to get the best outcome. At Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, our surgeons use the da Vinci Xi system for certain procedures. It’s not a robot replacing your doctor. It’s a tool your surgeon controls with care and precision.

🩺 The system helps your doctor move with more accuracy in small, hard-to-reach areas. It uses tiny instruments and a high-definition camera that helps give a clear view of what’s happening inside your body. For many patients, this means smaller incisions and a recovery that feels a little easier.

✅ This option is often used for procedures like gallbladder removal or hernia repair, but your doctor will help you decide what makes the most sense for your situation. If robotic-assisted surgery is right for you, your doctor will walk you through what to expect and answer questions you have.

🍏 As the school year unfolds, students face more than academic challenges. Managing stress, friendships, and expectations can sometimes feel overwhelming and difficult to express.

🩺 “Kids experience stress differently depending on their age and how they manage emotions,” says Dr. Ujuchukwu Okpechi, pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “What looks like acting out or moodiness is often their way of signaling that something feels off.”

✅ Recognizing the signs
◻️ Stress often shows up through behavior. Younger children may cling more than usual or complain about stomachaches. Some might have trouble sleeping or return to habits they had previously outgrown. Older kids may become more irritable, lose interest in things they usually enjoy, or avoid school. Teens may withdraw socially, show changes in eating or sleeping patterns, or stop engaging in familiar activities.

◻️ Encouraging conversation
Instead of asking general questions like “How was your day?” try prompts that help them reflect and open up. You could ask, “What was the hardest part of your day?” or “Did anything surprise you today?” These types of questions may give your child space to share what they’re feeling without pressure.

◻️ Creating a sense of calm
A steady after-school rhythm may help. Include time for physical activity, creative play, or relaxation. A calming bedtime routine supports better sleep, and screen-free meals provide a good opportunity to connect. These small moments of structure and presence may help your child feel safe and supported.

◻️ Knowing when to ask for help
If your child’s stress begins to disrupt their sleep, schoolwork, or relationships, it may be time to reach out. At Kelsey-Seybold, our pediatricians are here to help you understand what’s going on and help connect you and your child to needed resources.

Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are elevated but not high enough to be diagnosed as someone with Type 2 diabetes. It often develops silently, without obvious symptoms, but it still increases your risk for serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and full-blown diabetes. The good news? With the right lifestyle changes and medical guidance, prediabetes can often be reversed.

🩺 “Fatigue, frequent thirst, or more trips to the bathroom can be early signs of elevated blood sugar,” says Dr. Vinita Bhagia, endocrinologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “The good news is that prediabetes is reversible when addressed.”

Roughly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has prediabetes, and 90% don’t know it. Risk increases with age, being overweight, family history, a sedentary lifestyle, or conditions like PCOS or gestational diabetes. Left unmanaged, prediabetes puts you at higher risk to develop Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

✅ If you're unsure what your symptoms mean or want to understand your risk, let’s talk. Early action can make all the difference.

Hot flashes at work. Mood swings that come out of nowhere. Periods that show up irregularly or not at all. If this sounds familiar, you could be in perimenopause.

🩺 “Perimenopause is a stretch of time leading up to menopause,” says Dr. Andrea Baker, OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “For some women, that duration of time can be long, and knowing where you are in that transition helps us guide treatment and support long-term health.”

Perimenopausal symptoms often begin in your 40s, though they may start earlier. And because changes develop gradually, they’re often mistaken for stress or aging. But if something feels off and you can’t pinpoint why, a conversation with your doctor may help clarify what’s happening.

Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing:
◻️ Menstrual cycle changes (irregularity, changes in flow)
◻️ Hot flashes and night sweats
◻️ Mood changes such as anxiety or irritability
◻️ Vaginal dryness
◻️ Bladder control problems (like frequent urination or urges)
◻️ Difficulty concentrating

✅ Our OB/GYNs are here to help you understand what’s changing and why — and to help develop a care plan that fits your needs.

Type 2 diabetes often develops slowly, and the early signs can be subtle. Maybe you feel more tired than usual or notice small changes in your vision or skin. These symptoms can be easy to dismiss, but over time they may begin to affect how you feel day to day.

🩺 “Many people are surprised to learn they have diabetes because the symptoms can seem mild or disconnected,” says Dr. Jalaja Joseph, endocrinologist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Fatigue, skin changes, or increased thirst may not seem like a big deal on their own. But together, they can signal something that needs attention. The earlier we catch it, the more we can do to protect long-term health.”

👉 Some signs to watch for include breath that smells fruity and patches of darkened skin around the neck, underarms, or backs of the knees. Feeling unusually thirsty, even after drinking water, can also be a clue. You might notice more frequent trips to the bathroom during the night or find that small cuts are slow to heal. Blurry vision that comes and goes or persistent fatigue, even with rest, are also symptoms to mention to your doctor.

These symptoms do not always mean diabetes, but they are never something to ignore. A blood sugar screening is quick and can offer real answers. If the results require more action, getting support early may help you manage it before it leads to more serious problems.

✅ If you are unsure what your symptoms mean, Kelsey-Seybold clinicians can help you understand what is happening and guide you through the next steps. Whether that means ruling something out or starting care, our team of medical experts are here to help you.

When your period becomes unpredictable, it could point to a hormonal imbalance.

🩺 “Cycles don’t have to be perfectly regular to be healthy, but noticeable changes in timing or flow deserve attention,” says Dr. Faunda Armstrong, OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “We often see this with conditions like polycystic o***y syndrome or thyroid disorders.”

Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) impacts up to 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. It’s the result of the ovaries producing excess androgens, which may block ovulation. Besides irregular periods, many women with PCOS gain weight around their midsection, struggle with adult acne, or experience excess hair growth in areas where it doesn’t belong. Since symptoms vary widely, PCOS often goes undetected for months or years. That’s why tracking your cycle and symptoms may help doctors understand what’s going on and offer care that makes a real difference.

Here’s what treatment may look like:
✅ Lifestyle adjustments to support hormonal balance
✅Medications that help regulate your cycle or manage insulin sensitivity
✅Fertility support if you're trying to conceive

📲 Whether you're dealing with unpredictable cycles, heavy bleeding, or other symptoms that affect your daily life, our OB/GYN team can help. We’ll work with you to develop a plan that fits your goals and your life.

Regular mammogram screenings help doctors detect breast cancer early.

🩺 “Annual screenings are vital,” says Shona Joseph, DO, Family Medicine. “The earlier we find something, the more options we have to address it.”

✅ When Should You Start?
National recommendations now advise people at average risk to begin mammograms at age 40. If you have risk factors, your doctor may recommend starting even earlier.

✅ What To Expect
We offer advanced breast imaging at locations throughout Greater Houston. If further testing is needed, you won’t have to navigate it alone. We’ll help coordinate the next steps and answer your questions along the way.

Whether you’re getting your first mammogram or returning after some time away, we’re here to make the process everything you’d hope.
