What is a high functioning alcoholic?

Sometimes it's difficult to tell because funtioning alcoholocis are able to conceal their drinking habits from friends, family and coworkers.

One aspect to understand is that a functioning alcoholic regularly drinks alone as a way to avoid scrutiny or judgment from others.
Drinking alone at home relieves the pressure and difficulty of moderating or limiting their alcohol intake.

They can relax and "enjoy" drinking with out worrying others might notice how much they've had to drink.

3 signs you may need to look at your alcohol habit-

1. You lie about how much you drink-
It doesn't matter if you are lying to others or to yourself

2. You think you need it to "cope" with your day-
Things you don't want to feel or acknowledge so you numb it out

3. You drink to feel normal-

It can be confusing.
It can be a constant push and pull.
It can feel like you're all alone.
Choosing not to have alcohol in your life and trying to explain WHY to others is almost as stressful as quitting itself.
What do you say to friends and family? I'm cutting back, I'm trying not to over indulge, I just don't want to drink right now. Don't let other peoples disappointment in your healthy choice rattle you!
You GET to create a NEW identity and that's pretty exciting stuff especially if what you have been identifying with in the past is no longer working.

Ya know what it's like to be in a speeding car then slam on the breaks? Oh no...stuffs flying around and it's chaos!
Then it stops.
And you're forced to look all crap that got dislodged from under the seats, in between the cushions, in the glove box.
Where the heck did that come from?
How long has that been in here?

Something similar happens when we give up an unhealthy habit.
(like alcohol) Not being hidden or buried under __________ fill in the blank, all these emotions come to the surface.
Scary s**t right?

So...triggered, frustrated, anxious. The go to response?
Soothe, at any cost.
How do you soothe?
As humans we are hard wired to go towards pleasure and away from pain. It keeps us safe, in a weird way.
If it's back to the same old, same old and a familiar pattern (blurry mornings and regret) it's because the loop hasn't been interrupted.
AND it's not your fault! The pattern hasn't been broken to respond in a new way!!
But it can be!! You can learn to respond to the life around you in a new constructive way!
A beautiful new life waits, just reach out!

Happy Memorial Day everyone!
This being a big weekend for get togethers and (possibly) alcohol related activities, for some cutting back or saying NO to the festivities can be tricky...even difficult.
Try not to isolate but instead look at these situations as a tool to remind yourself how strong you are. What fortitude, what grace under pressure.
When you think this struggle may be FOREVER and "just the way life is" think again!
There is help available, changing the very way you approach alcohol and the beliefs/patters that exist in your brain about them can be changed!!

It's important to look deeply into compulsive behavior and dependency when dealing with food and alcohol. There can be emotional triggers among other things that can cause unhealthy behavior.
If you don't change the cycle or pattern the loop will keep repeating itself.
Underneath it all there is a reason for the unwanted behavior, a root cause. We can find it and change the cycle for ever!!!!!

Anxiety....endless talking, talking, chatter chatter in your head. What time is it?? Ugh...3:30am and you just want to sleep...
How do you handle anxiety when it wakes you up at all hours or when it creeps into your brain all day long?
Well...some want to drink to calm down, some may need a huge bowl of ice cream. Either way these solutions lead to more anxiety or maybe guilt for following this same pattern YET again.
Changing this pattern is possible, you are not alone!
