Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition where excessive bacteria grow in the small intestine, leading to symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and malnutrition.

It is estimated that up to 22% of the population may be living with SIBO. SIBO shares symptoms with many other GI disorders, leading many researchers to believe that the true number of those with SIBO may differ.

There are many similarities between SIBO and IBS, with SIBO often being the cause of some IBS symptoms. Patients with SIBO account for 78% of those dealing with IBS.

Congratulations Kristine Taylor, MS, RDN, LD, IFNCP on earning the Integrative and Functional Nutrition Certified Practitioner (IFNCP) Credential!

Kristine’s training and professional work experience started 15 years ago in Boston hospitals. Extensive experience in the clinical setting expanded her knowledge of human health and pathophysiology and highlighted the importance of food as medicine. She shifted into corporate wellness as a nutrition therapist and speaker, and began her pursuit of integrative and functional nutrition training. She enjoys translating the science into practical and actionable information for her clients.

Kristine moved back to her home state and opened a private practice, Tidewater Nutrition & Wellness LLC in Portland, Maine. Her focus is on digestive and metabolic health through a root cause, functional medicine lens. Her collaborative approach involves looking at the whole person, incorporating nourishing foods, enjoyable movement, stress management techniques, functional tests and supplementation (as needed) and real conversations. Kristine’s style is personalized, non-judgmental, light-hearted and always with empathy to help her clients find healing, health and wellbeing.

Everyone is different, but in general, GI transit time should be around 12 to 24 hours. If it takes less than 12 hours, you're likely not absorbing all the nutrients from your food. If transit time is greater than 24 hours, you could be absorbing toxins.

You can test your intestinal transit time by using activated charcoal.

IFNCP functional nutritionists can help you determine your transit time and then work with you to create a plan to address any imbalances.

Melatonin is a circadian hormone that peaks at night. When you consume food during periods of high melatonin concentration (think shift workers and night eaters), glucose tolerance is decreased, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, melatonin during fasting seems to facilitate pancreatic beta-cell recovery. Timing is everything when it comes to melatonin! If you supplement with melatonin, it's probably best to avoid food intake.

"The good news: prediabetes is almost always reversible with nutrition and lifestyle-related changes!"

An estimated 88 million Americans have prediabetes, but only 16 percent are aware they have it. People with a fasting blood sugar of 95 to 99mg/dL are 2.33 times more likely to develop diabetes than those with a lower fasting blood sugar. The good news: prediabetes is almost always reversible with nutrition and lifestyle-related changes!

The major human gut microbiome phyla consist of Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. There is no one perfect gut microbiome though, we are all unique when it comes to the balance of our microbiome inhabitants.
When appropriately balanced, the gut microbiome is protective, but when dysbiosis is present, the gut microbiome can fuel the inflammatory process leading to negative symptoms and disease. Functional nutritionists address all the nutrition and lifestyle factors affecting your gut microbiome and create a personalized, comprehensive plan to restore balance.
