Strong First SFGII recap
-
Being apart of an organization dedicated to high standards and community. I always walk away from these certifications with new friendships and a deeper well of knowledge.
Whether I am there as a staff member or a student there is always something new to learn. I appreciate that every certification I go to it seems they’ve tried to improve the teaching of how to build strength.
A special thank you to for giving me the opportunity to come up and assist. And to the other assistants you were a great crew to work with.
Last but certainly never least I am so proud of you. Becca will be an Elite instructor (tested & passed all 4 certifications)
I’ve gotten the chance to either assist or take all four certifications with my wife and those make for some really special memories. Until the next certification…
WE ARE STRONG FIRST

What’s in a name?
-
I named my business “Iron Pride Fitness” for a couple different reasons.
-
Firstly, I’ve had an affinity for lions since I could remember. Lions have always represented such strength & power. Lions don’t wake up thinking “am I king of the jungle?” No they wake up ready to prove that s**t day in and day out. They’re also fiercely loyal to their pride/ their community. I wanted to encapsulate the mental and physical strength that lions project, instilling those same traits to those I work with, building up my own “pride” as it were.
-
Iron representing the weights obviously; but more than that, it serves as a reminder that the weights don’t care who you are or where you’re starting from. A 24kg kettlebell weighs the same amount to each person using it. You can’t cheat the weight, it keeps us all honest in our fitness journey.
I’ve also always loved the concept of “iron strengthening iron” doing hard things will make us more resilient. We will all struggle with difficult times, but building a strong mind and body will always be a benefit during those challenges.
I’m currently taking on clients, if you or anyone you know is looking to progress in their fitness my inbox is always open. Even if it’s a quick question, Iron Pride Fitness is here to help!

Last but certainly not least, the princess herself, Arya.
-
Arya is our second fur baby. Though she is smaller than Vader she’s a scraper. She is a typical cat. She sleeps 20 hours a day and has the zoomies the other 4. She also loves attention, BUT ONLY when she wants it.
-
The final picture is her claim to fame. For some back story, Vader’s favorite toy is hair ties and when we rescued Arya Becca and I both had long hair. We left the ties around the house to keep the cats entertained. Arya started to act different, eating less, dry heaving, hiding, etc. Becca took her in and found out she had eaten over a dozen hair ties and they were clogging her entire digestive system. 5000 dollars later and a surgery that had her stitched from top to bottom she was brought home. Of course she needed to wear a cone but she let us know the whole time how she felt about it (that was her permanent stare at us for weeks) she’s much better now and we keep hair ties locked up tight. She is now a very expensive 🐈

Hi everyone! I’m Becca. Here’s a couple fun facts about me:
-
🌀 I’ve been a personal trainer since 2015 and am still personal training part time in addition to my full time career.
🌀 I became a hospital administrator for a rehabilitation clinic in November. I work with physical therapy, occupational therapy and Speech therapy.
🌀 I am a StrongFirst certified instructor as SFG1, SFB and SFG2 by the end of this year 🤞🏼.
🌀 I was a competitive gymnast for 11 years. I was state champion 2 years in a row and all around regional champion and placed 14th all around at Nationals.
🌀 I have a hand full of injuries that “should” cause me pain including arthritis of my entire lumbar spine, a disc that’s herniated inferiorly and posteriorly, arthritis in my right hip and shifty wrist bones. With my strength training I have been able to keep my body stronger than I could’ve ever imagined and with out pain.
-
Other than being really strong ;) I’m a pretty big girly girl.
🔆 I love dressing up, doing my make up and nails
🔆 handbalancing ( that I had to retrain myself )
🔆 I am obsessed with my two cats, Vader and Arya 🥰

For our new followers we wanted to introduce the Iron Pride Fitness crew.
-
Starting us off is me, Ethan. Some things about my career thus far
1️⃣I have been a personal trainer/ Instructor since 2014. I started my career at 24 Hour Fitness.
2️⃣ I left the corporate gym setting early in 2020 to start my own training business and help open we temporarily closed due to the pandemic 3 weeks later.. 😒 but have since reopened and are back up and running.
3️⃣ I have been partnered with since 2016 and I am currently working towards becoming an elite instructor this summer. Which means I have tested and passed the requirements for all 4 of their certifications.
4️⃣ I love tennis, I have been playing since 2004 and I am currently working on being a certified tennis instructor through USTA.
-
Other fun facts about me:
*️⃣ I love music, my first degree was in music performance. Let me know what your favorite genre or artist is in the comments!
*️⃣I have a deep connection with the Oregon coast and love living so close to the ocean.
*️⃣I am a gun nut. I grew up turning everything into a gun. Still love them as an adult. Let’s talk about it if you want;)

Arya here! First, to make sure Ethan is doing his job right ;) and second, to give you some cat food for thought..
I came to the simple realization that there are similarities between performing a press to handstand and performing a deadlift.
⚠️this is not to say they are the same exact pattern but there are parallels to be drawn that I will review below!
-
1️⃣DL: rooting feet & toes grip the floor =
HS: rooting palms & fingers grip the floor✅
-
2️⃣DL: shifting weight till BB hovers =
HS: shifting weight till toes hover ✅
-
3️⃣DL: pushing through floor =
HS: pushing through floor✅
-
4️⃣DL: straighten out by driving hips fwrd =
HS: straighten out by driving shoulders fwrd✅
-
When your muscles work together to enhance the ex*****on of a skill there are plenty of consistencies. It’s been so fun to relearn proper movement patterns upside down 🙃

Tip Tuesday: Deadlifts & Shin Angles
-
-
This tip is a real easy way to get a more effective pull as you deadlift.
➡️Simply, ensure that your shins are near vertical before performing a deadlift.
-
To compare: when you squat and the hips descend, your knees will drive forward to get your legs out of the way of your bottom position.
⚠️however, if this is your start position for a deadlift your shin is literally in the way of the barbells path upwards.
-
To fix this, before performing the deadlift check to see if your shins are out of the way. Vertical or near vertical is the goal
*️⃣take into account that your body’s biomechanics can be slightly different than the next person ie femur length, ankle mobility, etc etc.
⚠️if there is pain while trying to find the position you should reach out and we can help find the solution!

Tip Tuesday: Quad engagement
-
-
Squats are not bad for your knees.. doing squats with poor form definitely is.
One of the biggest issues I see with people coming out of a squat (or deadlift) is hyperextension of the knee joint. This can cause a lot of wear & tear on the joint.
-
A simple que that helps my students avoid hyperextended knees is to think about pulling their knee caps up by squeezing their quad muscles.
-
Try to visualize the tops of your legs tightening and as a result the kneecap gets pulled upwards as opposed to back into a locked position.
Think about this next time your working legs and let me know how it goes!

Mobility Monday: The Quadriceps
-
-
The tops of your legs, the group of muscles called the quadriceps can become stiff for many reasons but one were noticing happening a lot for our students is tight quads due to all the sitting while working from home.
-
Here’s a super simple way to stretch the quads throughout the day while you’re at your desk. As I explain in the video focus on trying to get your knee under your hip without loosing a neutral pelvis.
-
I also recommend to stretch for less time but with higher frequency throughout the day. Give this stretch a try and see if your mobility in the lower body increases.
-
As always leave a comment with any questions you may have regarding this mobility exercise!

Thoughtful Thursday: Partners

“If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far, go together”
~African Proverb
-
In fitness as well as in life, finding like minded people who build you up and help you progress is an absolute game changer.
-
Find those people who get you out of your comfort zone.
-
Connect with people who compliment your strengths as well as your weaknesses.
-
I am lucky enough to have a partner who is there by my side through it all and I feel blessed to go through life together.
-
But partner does not have to be a singular individual. Finding organizations, groups, teams, etc are all forms of partnerships that can enrich life.

Press PR with the 24KG(53lb) Left & Right
-
I pressed the 24kg once before about 6 months ago but haven’t been able to press it since. I started Tim’s program almost 5 weeks ago. Huge amounts of progress in a short amount of time, especially in my upper body. Plus the programming was extremely enjoyable. Thank you sn**ch overlord!
-
This is the 4th press I did w/in 15 min today. I’ve never been able to do that.

We posed the question to you all and the most requested tutorial was for the kettlebell sn**ch. I will be posting a portion of the sn**ch development each day this week.
-
Part 1: The Hike

✅If you do not have a good set up and cannot perform a good hike the rest of your sn**ch is going to suffer. You need to make sure that you are:
✅In a loaded hinge position. You should feel the tension in your hamstrings and glutes.
✅Braced midsection so your back does NOT go into flexion or extension
✅Packed shoulders. Your lat muscles should be pulling shoulders into your body -
✅The hike is up into your hips. As the bell goes up and back into your hips keep the hinge position, be sure to not extend your legs during the hike.
💪🏼 **ch

A great drill to develop single leg squats (pistol squats). When you are on your back you should focus on getting
-Core braced
-Straight leg stiff
-Upper body under tension
As you begin to ascend thinking about driving your foot through the floor while maintaining all the tension you built on the ground. If you want to learn more about pistol squats and how to progress let us know!
*video quality will continue to improve as I get a handle on this gimble device. If anyone has tutorial videos they recommend I’d love to know more!

I really love teaching sn**ches.
-
Some of the cues I use for effective sn**ching are:
-Push through the floor with your legs as you snap your hips.Guide the bell up, don’t lift.Loose grip on the handle during float
-
Fellow SFG instructors: what cues do you use for sn**ches?

If you’re stuck at home like almost all of us are I would recommend looking into a pull up bar, one that you can put in your door frame would even do the trick. There’s so many things you can do with one. With our free time we will be uploading helpful content to you all and if you’re interested in supporting us you can purchase on a weekly basis to have access to the complete weekly programs.
