On this day of trans visibility, I hope that we can all be reminded of the joys and the hope that the trans community brings to our communities. This is a reminder that during these turbulent times of oppressive tactics that we must band together to protect the love that we have for each other . I hope that this is will be a time and a reminder not to move through life with fear, but to reengage with the joys that life brings. As an ally, my hope is to use this time to re-commit to my work to ensure that within my communities, folks with trans experience can feel safe and whole in this world. I ask that all allies who see this to use this as an opportunity to check in with their attitudes and actions to around trans people and commit to ensuring the safety of our LGBTQIA+ communities. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

B is for bell. bell hooks was the author of over 30 books, including Ain’t I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism (1981), named by Publisher’s Weekly as one of the 20 most influential books published in 20 years; Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center (1984); Yearning: Race, Gender, and Cultural Politics (1991), winner of the American Book Award/Before Columbus Foundation Award; Teaching to Transgress (1994); the children’s book Homemade Love (2002), named the Bank Street College Children’s Book of the Year; and the poetry collections And There We Wept (1978) and When Angels Speak of Love (2005), and Appalachian Elegy: Poetry and Place (2012), winner of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s Best Poetry Award.

Throughout her life, hooks explored the relationship between s*xism, racism, and economic disparity in books aimed at scholars and at the public. In an interview with Bomb Magazine, she said, “To think of certain ways of writing as activism is crucial. What does it matter if we write eloquently about decolonization if it’s just white privileged kids reading our eloquent theory about it? Masses of black people suffer from internalized racism, our intellectual work will never impact on their lives if we do not move it out of the academy. That’s why I think mass media is so important.”

D is for Du Bois. W.E.B Du Bois, a scholar at the historically Black Atlanta University, established himself as a leading thinker on race and the plight of Black Americans. He challenged the position held by Booker T. Washington, another contemporary prominent intellectual, that Southern Blacks should compromise their basic rights in exchange for education and legal justice. He also spoke out against the notion popularized by abolitionist Frederick Douglass that Black Americans should integrate with white society. In an essay published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1897, "Strivings of the Negro People," Du Bois wrote that Black Americans should instead embrace their African heritage even as they worked and lived in the United States.

F is for Fannie.
*T/W Sterilization*

Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977) received a hysterectomy by a white doctor without her consent while undergoing surgery to remove a uterine tumor. Such forced sterilization of Black women, as a way to reduce the Black population, was so widespread it was dubbed a “Mississippi appendectomy.” From this tragic Hammer became an organizer for Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and, in 1964, helped organize the Freedom Summer where Black and White students helped Black people register to vote. Hammer also co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), which challenged the local Democratic Party’s efforts to block Black participation, and she launched a Freedom Farm Cooperative (FFC) and built a sustainable farming practice.
