Don’t get it twisted. I’m not against supplements.

Personally, I take magnesium, collagen, creatine, and digestive enzymes. Sometimes I take other supplements depending on what’s going on with me and what support I need at that time.

But I want you to understand that buying the new menopause blend or energy drink or probiotic won’t move the needle for you. Not really.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, gives you reliable results the way that changing your lifestyle will. That means a nutrient dense diet, making daily movement non-negotiable and prioritizing sleep.

Without making your daily routine one that nourishes you and builds you up, the supplements will just be a waste of time and money. I mean, it’s right in their name: supplement.

Hip Pain got you limping like you’ve aged overnight?

The first time I got out bed crunched over with new pain I’d never felt before in both hips, I thought how in the hell did I age 50 years overnight? And then hobbled to the bathroom like a granny 👵🏻

I felt it again the first time I tried strength training at home and did a few squats. Same thing when I did single leg squats and walking lunges.

Then my hips just started aching and hurting randomly when I was on the couch.

I was happy to discover I hadn’t rapidly aged overnight. It was just another fun? sign of perimenopause and hormones dropping.

Joint pain including shoulder, knee and hip pain are part of the Musculoskeletal Syndrome of Menopause coined by the amazing Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Vonda Wright who published a groundbreaking article on it last year in the Climacteric journal.

Optimizing my hormones helped me tremendously. No more creaking and cracking getting out of bed.

What also helped was weight training and focusing on strengthening the muscles around my hips including IT band and glutes.

The other thing that helped enormously was using a foam roller and targeted stretches.

You don’t have to suffer. This is not in your head. There are positive things you can do to get relief. Awareness is the first step.

🤢 Midlife women often need liver and gut health support, especially after taking antibiotics for a UTI or just due to the slowing digestive function with hormonal changes in perimenopause and menopause. You can really support your liver and your gut health with food.

🐛 Try adding these foods into your meals and your liver & gut bugs will thank you!

💫 Parsley (I love the curly parsley from the 80s!)
💫 Beans
💫 Asparagus
💫 Artichoke hearts
💫 Celery
💫 Radishes
💫 Avocado
💫 Brussels sprouts
💫 Broccoli, cooked
💫 Leafy greens
💫 Arugula
💫 Caulifower, cooked
💫 Yogurt
💫 Citrus fruit
💫 Raspberries
💫 Beets

Did you know your liver needs to be in tip top condition to metabolize your hormones properly? It’s common in the U.S. for women over 40 to get diagnosed with fatty liver disease or elevated liver enzymes.

To get your liver off the strugglebus, you need to nourish it with the nutrients it needs to function efficiently.

🐛 Your gut microbiome can also take a beating any time you take antibiotics. Help your little gut bacteria out by feeding them the foods they need to thrive.

What I wish I knew about menopause...

Back 12 years ago, I had no idea what menopause was about or that I had started my journey through perimenopause. Back then, I thought menopause was just about hot flashes and your period ending. Now that I’ve been in the trenches for over a decade, I know that menopause and the perimenopause transition includes a vast range of symptoms and challenges that can significantly impact a woman's life, career, health, and relationships.

If I could go back and give my past-self three pieces of advice that my current-self has learned, they would be:

1. Learn about my body: Women in my family didn't say squat about menopause or what happens or what to expect. Educating myself about the biological changes and natural process has meant the difference between feeling confused and scared about symptoms to taking action steps that support my body and work with my hormones instead of against them. Educating myself has allowed me to advocate for my health with doctors instead of just accepting what sometimes was outdated information and treatments.

2. Embrace a holistic approach: Menopause is not just a hormonal issue, it affects the whole body and mind. Taking a holistic approach by addressing diet, nutrition, movement, stress management, and emotional well-being is crucial for navigating through midlife. There's not one magic bullet.

3. Seek help and support: Just because menopause is a natural process is no reason to suffer needlessly. When you have trouble reading, you get glasses even though vision loss is a natural part of aging. Don't be a martyr. If you are having issues, even if you don't think they're related, seek help and support. Connecting with other women going through menopause and seeking support from experts can provide guidance, validation, and often, solutions.

What’s some advice you would give to others about menopause?
