Haley Licon, one of BMB's graduate students, won the "best technique award" for her poster at the PMCB retreat last month. The title was "Post-transcriptional regulation of the NT3 purine nucleobase transporter is mediated by a repressive stem loop in the NT3 3' mRNA untranslated region during the Leishmania donovani purine stress response." Congratulations, Haley!

Check out this fun and informative interview with Greg Martin (Shyng Lab), Eric Gouaux (affiliate BMB faculty member and Senior Scientist in the Vollum Institute) and Craig Yoshioka (Gray Lab, OCSSB) on OPB, in which they discuss the new $128M NIH grant to build four new cryo-electron microscopes here at OHSU. This grant is poised to make the university into a nationally recognized imaging center - one of only three in the country - when the microscopes are installed this fall.

Recently, Maureen Hoatlin, PhD, MBA, made a presentation at the Center for Precision Diagnostics, University of Washington, entitled, “Rare Variants and Outlier Phenotypes: Drug Discovery’s Crystal Ball.” Her talk touched upon how rare diseases can indicate good drug targets and eliminate bad targets. Dr. Hoatlin’s presentation was in one of several programs at UW to train graduate and medical students in drug discovery and development, designed to allow basic scientists better options to meet emerging demands in the workplace.
