It’s almost time to prune your roses!
We always prune on Valentine’s ❤️🩷

- Spring: The ideal time to prune most roses is early spring, just as new growth begins to appear and after the last frost.
- Fall (Optional): A light pruning in the fall can tidy up the bush and minimize wind damage during winter.

How to Prune a Rose Bush

1. Prepare Your Tools: Use sharp, clean pruning shears to ensure precise cuts and reduce the risk of spreading disease.
2. Start with the 3 D’s: Remove dead, damaged, and diseased wood first. Look for blackened, brittle, or broken stems and cut them away.
3. Shape the Bush: Make cuts at a 45° angle about ¼ inch above an outward-facing bud. This encourages the plant to grow outward, promoting a healthier structure.
4. Thin the Canes: Remove weak, spindly stems and any branches that cross or rub against each other. Leave 3–5 strong, healthy canes to form a sturdy framework.
5. Focus on Airflow: Aim for a vase-like shape with an open center. Good airflow helps reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
6. Feed and Mulch: After pruning, nourish your roses with fertilizer and add a fresh layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pro Tip: Always prune on a dry day to reduce the risk of infection. Be sure to sterilize your tools before and after pruning for optimal plant health.
