Something I hear from my clients all the time—once they’ve gotten a little time under their belt alcohol-free—is variations on this theme:

👉 “My life is the same but I feel different.”

👉 “Things at work are still on fire, but I’m not as overwhelmed by the chaos.”

👉 “Things are still hard right now, but not AS hard.”

When you cut out booze, it’s not like your life somehow magically becomes perfect and smooth—with no conflicts, issues, or drama. (Sorry to burst that bubble. 😅)

But what does happen—fairly quickly, actually—is that you find this grounded sense of calm within you. Feeling less reactive & unstable and more clear-headed & capable.

Even just after a few weeks without alcohol in your system, you’ll feel a difference in your perspective… and this, my friend, is a dramatic improvement.

🤦‍♀️ Life will continue to be “life-y.”

Those long walks on the beach, am I right!? 😆 But seriously—when I learned how to stop running… numbing… and trying to “escape” the hard stuff in my life…

Everything changed.

When I took a deep breath and turned to face my demons, I discovered that—most of the time—they were just trying to tell me something.

…or they were parts of myself that needed a little extra love.

I used to drink “at” the news.
(I used to drink “at” a lot of things…)

And I don’t judge myself for that. I actually have a lot of compassion for myself back then… ☺️

I mean, *Of course* I wanted to soothe the discomfort of seeing horrible and scary things happening in the world.

“Of course* I wanted to find a way to feel better—to “cope” with the darkness so that I could show up and do my job, tend to my family, do the dishes, laundry, and just generally “get by.”

We *all* want to get by.
To feel better.
To rest.

🗨️ But let me tell you: Drinking alcohol to cope with the darkness just creates more darkness.

While alcohol provides a temporary relief by slowing your mind and numbing your senses—it does so at a great cost.

Over time, the chemical chain reaction that alcohol creates in your body drags you further and further downward…

It drags you into depression.
It cranks up your stress & anxiety.
And it distances you from your ::self::

And then *everything* feels dark.

I can see in hindsight how *directly* my drinking impacted my perspective and mental health… and the most powerful lesson I’ve learned in my own journey—in taking a break from alcohol and letting those chemicals balance out and RESET—is that:

✨ The darkness is always tinged by light.
✨ The good is always out there.
✨ Rest is revolutionary.

To all the beautiful deep-thinkers and deep-feelers out there trying to cope right now, I see you. ❤️‍🩹

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by life, you don’t have to focus on the big picture… you don’t have to try "fix it all."

You can just start small…
Start with *you.*

Look for any little openings to create more peace in your life… to give yourself a few moments to rest.

And know that when you heal your body & mind, the dark clouds will start to lift.

When you’re able to stop *coping* with life you can get back to actually living it! And that changes how you show up in the world.

Finding community where you feel safe and supported can be one of the most transformational experiences of your life.

…whether long-term or simply for periods of growth…

Friendships can change; your mentors can come and go; a cheer squad can carry you through one tough game or a whole season… you get to choose. And you also get to ‘go with the flow.’

Drinking alcohol with meals is just a normal part of our culture, right?

🍷 There’s wine with dinner, cocktails at happy hour, or a ::toast:: with champagne… 🥂

But you know what’s another increasingly common part of life?

…digestive issues.

🔄 THE CONNECTION?
Among other things, alcohol disrupts our gut. Big time.

Alcohol is a disinfectant. We quite literally use it in cleaning products to kill germs. 🚫

…so, *of course* it’s a major disruption for our gut microbiome.

Alcohol interrupts important gut functions like regulating our immune system and producing important neurotransmitters… not to mention digestion and nutrient absorption.

👉 ON TOP OF ALL THAT?
[According to this recent article in the New York Times] There’s Acid Reflex, Inflammation and Bleeding, Gas and Bloating, Abnormal Bowel Habits, Leaky Gut, and Cancer Risk.

Oof.

This is the foundation of everything. >> We cannot shame ourselves into change. We can only love ourselves into evolution.

🥊 If beating ourselves up...

Judging and criticizing ourselves for all of the ways we want to improve... actually led to a successful, happy life...

We wouldn't be having this conversation right now. 😅

🏆 I was the champion of self-criticism.

👉 Holding myself to standards I would never expect of others.

😬 Over-functioning, over-compensating, and over-thinking my every move.

But the perfectionism and relentless judgment of myself didn't lead me to lasting change...

No, it just led to an incessant internal argument. 🤦‍♀️

There was part of me that wanted to cut back on my drinking. And part of me that felt it was the duct-tape holding my whole life together!

These two parts of myself were at war, and the dissonance in my mind grew louder and louder... which only led me to drink more, tbh.

It wasn't until I found the tools to quiet my loud inner critic and leaned all the way into self-compassion and *kindness* that I was able to find peace.

💗 Peace led to clarity.
💗 Clarity led to small changes.
💗 And those small changes led to a huge transformation.

I became a certified coach to help you to do the same. 🙌

Oof. 📦📦📦 This was a tough lesson for me.

Emotions and feelings unexpressed... shoved under the rug or numbed with wine 🍷 ...don't disappear.

They just sit there in the darkness until the collective weight is too much and then BAM! they pop up, like a beachball you've been holding underwater. 🙄

🔍 These outbursts can look like anger, resentment, unexpected tears, a bout of online shopping... you name it. Buried emotions will find their release.

Starting a daily journaling practice is a great way to get in front of this. Just the awareness of your own thoughts can lighten the load, even if you never share them with others. (...but, chances are good that the clarity from writing and processing will help you find the words to speak up, set a boundary, or otherwise manage difficult situations.) 😏

Also, I found that settling down booze for a bit really helped the noise in my brain to settle... and I found so much more ::room to think::

Whale, whale, whale. 🐳 Will you look who it is…

The Surgeon General has entered the chat. 😏

Many of us have been saying that “alcohol is the new cigarettes” and this article is pretty damn affirming:

“U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy is urging the U.S. to adopt warning labels on alcoholic beverages, similar to those on cigarette packages. Alcohol, he noted, is responsible for over 100,000 cancer diagnoses and 20,000 related deaths each year, – yet the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk.”

Alcohol is the third-leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., after to***co and obesity. Dr. Murthy said, “Many people out there assume that as long as they’re drinking at the limits or below the limits of current guidelines of one a day for women and two for men, that there is no risk to their health or well-being. The data does not bear that out for cancer risk.”

I say all the time that “I accidentally quit drinking.”

✌️ It’s the truth.

When I started all this, I just wanted to take a few weeks off… give my liver a much-needed break. 🧯

But then, once I started learning all of this stuff about alcohol and habit change… nervous-system regulation and the power of mindset.

I started DRINKING LESS in a really natural way.

🚫 No forcing.
🚫 No gritting my teeth or “missing out.”

I followed a pathway led by science and—here’s the kicker—I didn’t stop drinking!

🚫 I STOPPED TRYING to stop drinking.

I pushed pause on the willpower game of grit, and picked up curiosity and self-compassion.
