At Allies in Change, we honor survivors, remember those who have been lost, and recommit ourselves to ending the cycle of abuse. Domestic violence affects people of all backgrounds, and together, we can break the silence, raise awareness, and support healing.

This month, we invite you to stand with us, whether by learning more, sharing resources, or simply starting conversations that matter. Every voice helps create a safer, more compassionate community.

Teen dating violence (TDV), also called, “dating violence”, is an adverse childhood experience that affects millions of young people in the United States. Dating violence can take place in person, online, or through technology.

Teen dating violence profoundly impacts lifelong health, opportunity, and wellbeing. Unhealthy relationships can start early and last a lifetime. The good news is violence is preventable, and we can all help young people grow up violence-free.

Teen dating violence is common. Data from CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey in 2019 indicate that among U.S. high school students who reported dating during the 12 months before the survey:

About 1 in 12 experienced physical dating violence.
About 1 in 12 experienced sexual dating violence.

Some teens are at greater risk than others. Female students experienced higher rates of physical and sexual dating violence than male students. Students who identified as le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, or q***r (LGBTQ) or those who were unsure of their gender identity experienced higher rates of physical and sexual dating violence compared to students who identified as heterosexual.

BECOMING ALLIES:
Becoming Allies is a book that has been written for several different audiences.

Most of all it is written for abusive partners who are enrolled in a program. It can be a required or recommended reading that attendees of abuse intervention programs can read on their own, straight through. It can also be used like a textbook where everyone in the group is asked to read a certain chapter between groups with the next group focusing on material related to that particular chapter.

It is written for abusive partners who are not yet in a program or are just starting out on their journey of self-awareness. It should be noted that throughout the book they are encouraged to consider enrolling in a group for abusive partners if they are not presently in one. This may also be a first step in helping to raise their awareness about this issue in their lives. The next step would be to enroll in a program.

Professionals in the field are likely to find it a helpful and informative book to read. It is likely to validate many of the observations, thoughts, and perceptions of more seasoned abuse intervention professionals. It provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to the issue of abusive partners for those newer to the field. Everyone is likely to learn from reading this book as it introduces some distinct concepts developed by the author such as radiating intensity, primary accountability, the bully effect, and preemptive reassurance, among others.

Survivors and those professionals who work with them are also likely to find this book helpful and informative in better understanding what drives abusive behavior while also clearly naming many aspects of the abused partner’s experience.

1 in 10 adolescent youth have experienced teen dating violence. Likely at least one person in every peer group.
Learning about the warning signs for abusive relationships is a key resource for teens and their support systems at home and school. Many of the warning signs of an adult abusive relationship are the same as those seen in teen relationships. Abuse in teen relationships, like in adult relationships is the willful hurting or violation of one person by another person. Control often looks the same too: "interfering with someone’s basic liberties by trying to make them think or act in ways they would not freely choose." -Becoming Allies
