Ann Truax, now retired after seven years as the administrative assistant with The Arbor at Avamere Court, says life is for living! And she is certainly living by this motto. Ann has been a valued member of the team, always greeting visitors, residents, and fellow teammates with a smile and a warm welcome.

“We have families who walk in here looking for a place for their loved one," Ann shared. "They want to know that their loved one will be safe here. My goal is to be a reassuring first impression and presence.”

We're thrilled to welcome back Nikki Whittaker to Avamere at St. Helens as the Executive Director! Nikki's administration career began at Avamere as the memory care administrator. She has since worked in memory care and residential settings.

Nikki brings experience as a Qualified Mental Health Associate, Program Coordinator for an Intensive Behavioral Health Team, and Residential Administrator at Columbia Community Mental Health (CCMH) in a PSRB Facility. She is passionate about creating meaningful, supportive environments for residents, families, and staff.

Nikki shared: "The relationships I build with both residents and staff are what drive my commitment to quality care and community. I look forward to continuing this mission at Avamere St. Helens and further enhancing the services we provide."

Her best friend growing up was her grandma, who was her positive mother figure and inspired her to work in senior living. Nikki loves spending time with her family, including her spouse and children. Her 11-month-old granddaughter is her little sidekick, filling her days with joy and laughter.

"I believe in the power of humor and always love a good joke," Nikki shared. "Laughter truly is the best medicine!"

She is excited to be back at Avamere and to continue making a positive impact in the lives of those we serve. Welcome, Nikki!

Meet Larry, one of our incredibly talented residents at Gilman Grove, who continues to fuel his lifelong passion for car building. Pictured here is a stunning replica of a 1916 Willy’s Overland Roadster — built from scratch. When the original body rusted out, Larry hand-formed new panels using custom bucks and sourced unique parts like headlight fixtures from a 1937 Dodge pickup at a local garage sale. It runs on a 355 Chevy engine (loud enough to set off car alarms!), has a 5-speed transmission from a Firebird, rear suspension from a ‘84 Jaguar, and even sports his own custom-designed grill and a classic “hooga” horn.

Larry finished this masterpiece in 2010, but it’s just one of many — he’s built 3 or 4 cars himself and contributed to dozens more over the years. These days, he still heads out in the mornings to work on his current project: a 1929 Model 8 pickup truck. For that one, he’s even machining his own nuts and bolts — since the originals are no longer made at all.

We’re proud to support residents like Larry who continue doing what they love, with passion, purpose, and a little grease under their nails. 🛠️🚗
