The threat bucket is a model I come back to again and again to understand what the body is communicating with symptoms/sensations.

When we are aware of the threats in our buckets it’s natural to avoid the things that may cause it to overflow.

While avoidance can be useful for initial relief, progressive reintroduction, being with the discomfort is the pathway onward.

In massage and movement, we prioritize sending signals of clarity and stability to the brain to help reestablish trust and safety within.

So much of our time is spent with eyes narrowed forward and down. Our body follows.

Pencil pushups are a great way to retrain the habitual patterns of the eyes to improve balance, concentration, and address compensation patterns.

Spend 3-5 minutes with some pressure therapy for the suboccipitals, lateral ribs, and sacral attachments.

Why I find this useful beyond the tissue:
⭐️shift from overthinking to feeling
⭐️pressure speaks to your nervous system without having to go to extreme range of motion for hypermobile bodies
⭐️nervous system’s that need intensity can find it here paired with slowing down and yielding

I have been making the effort to receive as much bodywork as I can this year, not only for my self care, but for the valuable knowledge that comes from receiving.

A highlight has been the reiteration of bodywork as a communication between nervous systems. The effort or ease with which pressure is applied by the therapist, directly relates to how the work is received by the client.

This is one of many reasons I believe in Thai Massage - the rhythmic nature moving through the layers of the body thoughtfully, soothes the nervous system even when sensations can be intense.

✨The Optic Nerve✨

Cranial nerve 2 reminds us that our eyes impact our whole body.

When the eyes are fatigued, the body compensates for the lack of clear information the brain is receiving. That may present as headache, nausea, neck pain, or a myriad of other symptoms that our body produces to get our attention - to ask us to change.

Just as habitual movements can cause strain in our body, our eyes want to engage in different ways.

If our eyes are narrowed downward(phone), you may find relief from sending the eyes up, side, or just closing the eyes altogether to recenter.

Retiring the muscles of 2025 for the cranial nerves of 2026! It’s been a fun tradition to make my own niche calendar each year for my office.

Our sense of smell is highly connected to emotion and memory, which both impact pain. The conscious use of scent may help reduce the sense of threat you experience therein reducing pain/other protective outputs.

Ideally, you would pick up a random scent, say from a group of essential oil bottles so that you have to do the work of identifying and visualizing the scent.

So many fun ways to work wit the calves in Thai Massage, and a couple of them offer a calf massage for both practitioner and receiver!

The calf muscles are often referred to as the second heart, as their muscular contraction does so much to move blood and lymph back up towards the heart.
