A crazy few months have kept me away from posting in a while. My wife and I started off 2024 with a new home and studio space in North Portland. I finished setting up my studio space in March and have been working long hours to get through my lengthy list of client work. Here is one of the most recent restorations that went out the door today. This is a copy of “The Jefferson Bible”, which was reproduced from Thomas Jefferson’s original hand written notes for the US Congress in 1904. This was rebound in Aniline Straight Grain Goat, which has a spot-on grain pattern as the original. The cover and spine were tooled in 23k gold leaf.

This Fannie Farmer cookbook left the studio today. Packaging tape encapsulated the covers and many of the internal pages. Thankfully it all came off, leaving minimal damage underneath. This heavily used cookbook is ready for many more years of use.

Packaging tape removal was a success on the title page of this Fannie Farmer cookbook. Once this book is completed, I will share before and after photos of the covers and the dozen or so of the other pages that were covered in tape as well.

Another recent repair. The original spine was missing. Using a similarly textured bookcloth, the spine was replaced and hand-colored to blend with the original cloth. There was minor paper mending throughout the textblock, as well as Japanese tissue hinges added to the inside covers. A conservation phase box was made to house the book, and keep it safe from shelf wear. The phase box was dressed up with a leather label, titled in 23k gold.
