This month, we have the distinct honor of celebrating the 150th anniversary of Providence St. Vincent, Oregon’s first hospital.

After an arduous journey from Montreal and settling in the Northwest, the Sisters of Providence began laying the groundwork for their ministry and Mission – to care for the poor and vulnerable. On July 19, 1875, that Mission came to life with the opening of St. Vincent Hospital on NW 12th Ave in Portland. One doctor and five sisters ran the hospital in a three-story, wood-frame house with capacity for 75 beds.

Just shy of St. Vincent’s 20th anniversary, the hospital moved to a bigger facility nearby on NW Westover Road with room for 275 patients. And 76 years after that, St. Vincent administrator Sister Rita Ferschweiler, SP, orchestrated the hospital’s momentous move to its current location on NW Barnes Road – over the hill, in Washington County farmland. Despite obstacles and plenty of pushback, Sister Rita persevered to expand and meet the needs of the growing community.

Today, Providence St. Vincent Medical Center is an internationally recognized hospital with more than 5,000 caregivers and the capacity to care for nearly 600 patients.

As we celebrate this remarkable milestone and reflect on our history, we are grateful for the legacy of the Sisters of Providence, for the Mission that guides our daily work, and for our patients who rely on us for health, healing and hope.

Happy 150th anniversary Providence St. Vincent!

Congratulations to Nicole Duyck, RN, in our mother-baby unit, for being recognized with the May DAISY award! A recent patient described how Nicole eased her fears and provided exceptional care:

"I was in despair that I haven't known before. As soon as she came into the room, the mood changed. We didn't just feel cared for, we felt cared ABOUT. We felt like she was really paying attention to what was going on with us and helping us to make things better.

"The next night, Nicole was back. Our baby was still losing weight and passed the 10% threshold. We were upset and scared. Again, Nicole was there for us. She was so calm, and kind. She was so competent and knew exactly what to do.

"I have honestly never felt so secure or in such good hands in any medical setting ever. Frankly, I don't actually have the words to describe what this experience was like, other than it was wonderful in a new way. In a hope-giving and life-affirming way. I am so thankful for Nicole. I don't know how we could have done it without her, and I know that we did it because of her care.”

Cheyenne Tallmon shares the scary moments giving birth to her daughter Charlotte and her incredible heart transplant journey with Stephanie Kralevich and FOX 12 Oregon. Today, medical care isn’t something that Jamal and his family worry about.

For Jamal and his wife, who moved to Washington in 2021, Medicaid (also known as Medi-Cal in California) was a lifeline.

After his restaurant job in 2024 didn’t provide insurance coverage, and his wife required extra care during her pregnancy, Medicaid stepped in to offer the support they needed. Health care professionals were there to assist the family in securing pregnancy coverage and enrolling their child in Medicaid, ensuring they continue to receive the care they deserve as they prepared for their second pregnancy.

Medicaid plays a significant role in ensuring families like Jamal’s have access to necessary health care services.
