Your reproductive endocrinologist or other provider may have suggested acupuncture for stress relief. And it is true that acupuncture can help in that area.

But working with an acupuncturist who is also a fertility specialist means you have someone who understands your protocols, knows your medications, and can help you ask the right questions at the right time.

Two providers, two different lenses, looking at your body and supporting it from different directions.

This kind of whole system care, before and during IVF, has been shown to lead to better outcomes.

If you’re curious about how acupuncture can support you during IVF, please reach out to set up a free consultation.

Trying to conceive takes up a lot of space - emotional, mental, and physical. Not to mention the impact on your relationships, scheduling appointments, and all the other small ways TTC shows up in your life.

One of the things I want my patients to know is that there is no “right” timeline or experience.

I also want them to know they don’t have to navigate this journey on their own. Finding community and support makes such a difference.

Part of my role as a fertility acupuncturist is helping them understand what their body is telling them and feel less alone in the decisions they are making.

A miscarriage is a loss. It doesn’t matter how early it happened. The grief is real.

If you’ve had more than one miscarriage, you’ve probably heard some version of “It happens” or “Just try again.”

But that isn’t a reason for your care team to stop asking questions. You don’t have to accept “these things happen” as a complete sentence.

This is National Infertility Awareness Week. If you are somewhere on this journey, whether it’s loss, IVF, IUI, or something else, you aren’t alone.

Bringing awareness to this issue, both this week and throughout the year, makes it easier for someone else to get the support they need.

When 1 in 6 couples is affected, infertility isn’t uncommon, and they are more than a statistic.

Whether it is pregnancy loss, IVF, IUI, or secondary infertility, these stories deserve to be shared.

I built my practice around supporting patients through fertility challenges because I understand how difficult infertility is firsthand.

This is National Infertility Awareness Week, and if you are experiencing infertility, no matter where you are on your journey, please know you’re not alone.

When we share our stories, we make it easier for the next person to reach out, ask questions, and find the support they need.

I want to talk about some common period misconceptions because these misconceptions are doing real harm.

First, having a period every month doesn’t always mean you’re ovulating.

Ovulation has its own signs and symptoms, and learning to recognize them in your own body is going to be more useful in the long run than relying on an app.

Especially if your cycle falls outside a “normal” 28 day cycle (which is an average many people don’t actually experience).
Next, severe period pain is not normal.

Yes, some discomfort is part of it. But you shouldn’t be losing days of your life every month due to pain or having to rely on over the counter pain relief to function.

And if you’re dealing with severe pain every month, you have more options than just birth control - including acupuncture and herbal medicine.

And let’s talk about cycles because, again, that 28 day number we all know is just an average.

So how long should your cycle last? 25 to 35 days is a reasonable range. What matters most is knowing what’s typical for you, and noticing when something changes.

Finally, if you have questions about your cycle or symptoms, you can seek support around reproductive health, even if you aren’t trying to get pregnant.

If you have questions about your cycle, please drop them in the comments!

I’d also love to hear what misconceptions about periods and cycles you’ve heard.

“Erin has been an absolute godsend during my TTC/pregnancy journey. I started seeing her at a challenging, stressful, and vulnerable time following a pregnancy loss and several failed fertility treatments and was so grateful for her deep knowledge and expertise, time, and the sincere care she extended towards me.

She has always been so willing to go the extra mile – whether that’s coming in on her days off to align with my treatment days, providing other care team recommendations, or just serving as a sounding board when I needed it the most.

I’m now heading into my third trimester with spontaneous twins (!) and I fully credit Erin with making that happen.

To anyone in a similar situation, facing daunting fertility challenges and looking for a holistic and individualized approach that really works, look no further than Erin and the Solstice health team.” - LB

Most of us were never actually taught about our menstrual cycles.

We learned we’d get a period. That was about it.

And many of us only ever compared notes with close family, which means if heavy periods and painful cramps are normal for them, we assumed it was normal for everyone.

There was never an explanation of what ovulation actually feels like or what the follicular phase is.

That’s why helping my patients understand their cycle is always where we start.

As a fertility specialist, I won’t gatekeep this information.

First, sleep is not optional. Seven or more hours a night is when your body regulates your cortisol and balances reproductive hormones. We need sleep to function in so many ways.

Acupuncture measurably improves uterine lining thickness. This is documented in reproductive medicine research.

What you put on your skin and bring into your home matters. I never want to fearmonger, but endocrine-disrupting chemicals in everyday household and beauty items do interfere with estrogen and progesterone signaling.

You need to eat a varied diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. The nutrients and antioxidants you get from “eating the rainbow” help reduce the inflammation that can impact your fertility.

Movement supports circulation and your ovaries and uterus, require adequate blood flow to function.

If you’ve had two miscarriages, you should ask for testing. RPL (recurrent pregnancy loss) testing gives us a deeper understanding of what is happening and guides the next steps.

A chemical pregnancy is a miscarriage. It should be recognized and counted.

You do not need fifteen supplements to be healthy and food restriction or an extreme diet can actually do more harm than good.

If you’re over 35 and trying to conceive, you’ve probably already had multiple conversations about your age.

Instead of focusing on your age, I’m more interested in what’s happening in your body…

How well-oxygenated are your ovaries? What does your cycle tell us about your hormonal balance? What are your stress levels and how to they impact you?
If you’re ready to go deeper, I’d love to talk.

You can book a free consultation at 503-442-1205, through the link in my bio, or by sending me a DM.

If you have irregular cycles and want to know how to figure out when you’re ovulating - this is for you.

If you’re using tools like apps and OPK tests and still can’t figure out when your fertile window is, none of it makes sense, and you’re looking at all of this data and you cannot discern when you’re ovulating, what do you do?

There are signs your body will give you that can be helpful:

1. Around your ovulation window, you should experience an increase in your libido.

2. You should also experience a change in your cervical fluid. When you are close to ovulation, your cervical fluid becomes slippery and stretchy, like raw egg white, because that is what allows the s***m to get where it needs to go.

3. You also may notice things like an increase in energy

4. Some people also experience something called mittelschmerz, which is a little bit of pinching pain or mild cramping that happens right around the time that you ovulate.

For most people, it is best to use multiple methods to determine ovulation - so use an aura ring and use the OPK strips.

But also keep track of the physical symptoms that your body is giving you that tell you.

As you start to notice the symptoms, the patterns, the trends that happen within your own body, you can verify those results by doing something like an OPK test so that you know that what you’re noticing is accurate. It’s your body telling you that you are fertile.

You also can bring all of that data to someone like me. It is my job to help you understand what’s going on in your body and help you decipher all of these things so that you don’t have to miss another month of fertility.
