It can just take a second. A child can grab a bottle of medicine that is left within reach and swallow a pill before you know it has happened. To help keep children safe, make sure to put all medicine away — up, away, and out of sight — after every use.

Planning some ice fishing with the family this season? Safe Kids VT partner Northern New England Poison Center (NNEPC) wants to remind everyone to NEVER use portable generators in enclosed spaces, including an ice fishing shack (Bob house, ice shanty, smelt shack). Why? Because of potential carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is created when fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane & oil burn incompletely and can be deadly, even in small amounts. Symptoms of exposure include headache, tiredness, trouble breathing, and dizziness. Learn more at www.nnepc.org. Another SKVT partner, Vermont Fish & Wildlife , offers tips for doing this fun and family-oriented sport safely at vtfishandwildlife.com/vermonts-ice-fishing-opportunities/ice-fishing-basics.

It’s easy enough to confuse flavored seltzers with ‘hard’ (alcohol infused) beverages. Even harder when the cans are inadvertently switched! Use extra care when children have access to the party cooler full of mixed beverages.
