You just found out you are pregnant, and eager to start prenatal care! That first visit with your midwife makes it feel so real.

So you call your midwife, only to be told that they want you to wait until around 10 to 12 weeks for your first appointment.

Wait. WHAT?

This can feel like a long time, but the good news is that for pregnant folks who are low risk and do not have a history of repeated miscarriage, waiting until around 12 weeks for your first appointment is completely normal.

Check out our latest blog post for information about the start of prenatal care, and what you can do in the meantime: https://www.waterbirth.net/blog/is-it-normal-to-wait-until-12-weeks-for-your-first-prenatal-visit

The one where mom said “That was insane. But damn, it was worth it.”
The birth of baby Eve was a mix of intensity, adrenaline, and pure power. I knew this mama was strong from our first meeting, because she’s a weight lifting goddess and personal trainer. But nothing compares to witnessing her strength in labor and birth! She was a powerhouse!
When I asked her days later about her experience, She told me how she was thankful for the Spinning Babies techniques, which were painful but incredibly effective. And she really appreciated not having to think for herself, just following guidance and being able to fully trust each suggestion from her team.
Her words afterward: “It was insane. But damn, it was worth it.”

Soon after they arrived I was able to head to the birth center, going from one birth to the next. Two babies within 24 hours!
I found her in the bathroom, laboring quietly. Her midwife, Amber, was ready to get things moving, suggesting walking and stairs to increase contractions. And that’s exactly what we did, lunges, stairs, walking around the block twice, and things quickly got intense. Her water broke during this, and by noon, she was 7cm.
But at 8cm, the cervix started to retract and the midwife noticed during a check that baby was acynclitic (head slightly wonky to one side). So I had to pull out my Spinning Babies expertise! We tried the forward-leaning inversion, shake the apples, and exaggerated side lying. And in a very short time, baby shifted, and was no longer acynclitic.
The progress was dramatic and we could feel things pick back up beautifully. After an equally intense pushing phase, she was able to bring her baby girl into the world!
The immense relief, ecstatic joy, and otherworldly birth high energy filled the room. We were all buzzing with it ✨

The one where mom said “That was insane. But damn, it was worth it.”
From our first conversation, this mama knew what she wanted, and she wasn’t afraid to dream big while holding space for the unknown. Her ideal birth was one where she felt empowered, in control, and free to make decisions about her body and her experience. She wanted her birth to be a reflection of her strength, to prove to herself that she could do hard things. She wasn’t rigid in her expectations, she held them with her hands and heart open, knowing birth might have it’s own plans!
So when I got that call one lovely Fall evening that things were starting I couldn’t help but feel excited to see how her story would unfold. When they texted me in early labor, I was at another birth! We made a plan to stay in contact since contractions weren’t quite regular and I hoped baby would wait until I was done with the birth I was already at.
By 2 AM, her partner called me. Labor had picked up, and they were 5-7 minutes apart.
By 4 AM, they arrived at the birth center. (to be continued)
