Hepatitis B Vaccine Recommended For Diabetic Adults!!!

New guidelines from the ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization practices) recommends that all unvaccinated adults, aged 19 to 59, with type1 and type 2 diabetes receive the hepatitis B vaccine. The vaccination should be administered as soon as possible after adults within this age group have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Adults over 59, who haven’t been vaccinated, can receive the hepatitis B vaccination at their doctor’s discretion. The Dec 23rd issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, published by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) includes an outline of the recommendations. According to the report between 700,000 and 1.4 million people in the US are infected with the hepatitis B virus.

Symptoms include abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting. Chronic HBV infection damages the liver and can lead to serious illness and death. More than 15 percent of adults with chronic HBV infection develop cirrhosis and liver cancer.
People with diabetes are at an increased risk for HBV infection, which can occur through minute amounts of blood from an infected person who has shared a medical or glucose monitoring device.

The hepatitis B virus thrives outside the body and is easily transmitted. Transmission is possible if finger-stick devices or blood glucose monitors meant for one person are used by more than one person without appropriate cleaning or infection control measures.

The CDC issued in a recent news release that, “Initiatives are ongoing to improve infection control training of staff responsible for providing or assisting with diabetes care, and to improve the design and labeling of devices used in diabetes monitoring and treatment.”

Travelers should get the HBV vaccine if they’ll be engaged in sexual contact or daily physical contact with the local population or are likely to seek medical and dental treatment in local facilities.

PASSPORT HEALTH, TRAVEL INDUSTRY LEADERS GEAR UP FOR THE NATIONAL TOUR ASSOCIATION’S CONVENTION

Jorge Eduardo Castillo, Passport Health's Corporate Director of Business Development & Marketing, will speak at the 2011 National Tour Association Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, December 5th to the 9th. Passport Health is the leading provider of travel medical services and immunizations in the U.S. The company's travel medicine specialists counsel and prepare travelers whether they are traveling for business, leisure, mission or volunteer work.

“We are honored to be a part of this conference,” commented Castillo. “As thought leaders in our industry, we put a lot of emphasis and resources on patient education. You have to 'know before you go' or you run the risk of succumbing to unnecessary ailments,” he said. “Travel industry leaders need to understand the importance of travel health counseling and immunizations. This can make the difference between a trip of a lifetime and a trip no one wants to remember.”

The National Tour Association (NTA) is the leading association for travel industry professionals to and from North America. There are over 40 Countries and 600 destinations represented. “What sets NTA tour operators apart is the high-quality service they provide their clients. And nothing supersedes the clients' safety and health,” said Lisa Simon, president of NTA. “Passport Health will help our members understand how to prepare their customers for overseas travel. The more tour operators can learn about what can go wrong, the better they can make sure everything goes right.”

Mr. Castillo will be speaking about the importance of travel medicine as a crucial component of the trip planning process during the education seminar titled The Business Case Behind Protecting Your Client’s Health. “One of the issues we will be discussing is the correlation between seeing a travel medicine specialist and a decrease in travel-related illnesses,” continued Castillo. “This means a healthy traveler, good reviews for the travel agent and a return-client for the future. Everyone wins.”

Earlier this year Castillo traveled to Dakar, Senegal to speak to the Africa Travel Association's (ATA) delegates during the ATA 36th Annual World Global Congress. Oftentimes, leisure and business travelers are left to find resources on their own or are advised to visit a health department; neither option is adequate for an individual who is traveling to areas in certain underdeveloped countries like India, China, Brazil, Peru and even some parts of Europe.

About Passport Health: Passport Health is an innovative network of travel immunization clinics with offices in 36 states and 200 offices nationwide. The company’s business model is unique in the medical service industry. New Recommendations for the Flu Vaccine and Egg Allergies!!!

Eggs are one of seven of the most common food allergens in children, and about 1.5 percent of children are allergic to hen's eggs – although it is thought that at least two-thirds or more generally outgrow egg allergy by age 16.

Risks that may put you or your child for increased risk for egg or other food allergies are a family history of asthma, food allergy or other type of allergy such as eczema.

So why is this in the news? Well, a study presented at a recent ACAAI (American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology) meeting described the interim findings from an ongoing two-year study seeking to evaluate the safety of giving a seasonal influenza vaccine to children with an egg allergy. Preliminary results suggest it is indeed safe for children with severe egg allergy to receive this extremely important vaccine, especially in those kids with asthma, to avoid complications of the flu.

The study’s findings are consistent with other studies over the past 12 years that seem to confirm even those children with severe egg allergy may receive the vaccine safely.

With flu season just around the corner, having an egg allergy may no longer be a good reason to not get the flu vaccine, according to new guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

Individuals allergic to eggs should still continue to receive the flu vaccine from an experienced health care provider, who is familiar with reactions to vaccines, and a egg-sensitive individual is observed for a period of at least 30 minutes after administration.

Flu Myths Debunked!

It's getting to be that time of year again where more people are sniffling and coughing...and we all know what that means, flu season. You may be trying to decide whether or not to get a flu shot this year. Here are a few myths you should disregard when coming to your own decision regarding whether or not to get a flu shot this year1

The flu is just a bad cold: the flu kills up to 49,000 people each year. Unlike a cold, flu symptoms come on suddenly.

The flu shot causes the flu: 35% of people believe the flu shot causes the flu. But that's not true, according to the CDC, since the flu shot contains a "dead" virus. The most serious side effects of getting a flu shot include a headache, pain at the injection site, or wheezing and a runny nose.

New "combined" shots are more dangerous than the old version: the new flu shot that protects against both H1N1 and seasonal flu are made the same way as the old flu shot. Every year, vaccine makers include different viral strains that are likely to cause illness when developing flu vaccines.

Only sickly people need flu shots: this couldn't be further from the truth. Actually, the most vulnerable people, such as babies under six months old, aren't able to get a flu vaccination so they rely on those that are old enough around them to get vaccinated. If all the adults around a baby got a flu vaccine, then they would create a "cocoon" of protection from the flu around the baby.

Flu shots contain mercury: This is not true. Fears about mercury stem from a preservative called thimerosal, once commonly used in vaccines but mostly phased out since 2001. Thimerosal was used to prevent fungus growth or other potentially dangerous germs from contaminating flu vaccines. However, Thimerosal contains ethyl mercury, not methyl mercury which is linked to brain damage.
