Riley, an ICU nurse at MHMMC Portland, has earned a DAISY Award for his care of a family saying goodbye to a loved one. He was nominated by the patient’s sibling, who shared how Riley cared for their brother and the family following a motorcycle accident:

“From the moment my brother entered the hospital, he had no way of communicating — no way of doing any of the things that allow us to build connections or make us full people in the eyes of others. Riley, however, always seemed interested in knowing who my brother was. I shared photos with him, told him what type of music he liked, what he did for fun, what made him upset and what he liked to eat…

Riley was great at explaining the complicated details of my brother’s various illnesses and injuries and was immensely caring and supportive as we made the hardest decisions we have ever had to make. These are the things that make Riley a great nurse, but the connections he built with my family and my brother are what make him a wonderful person. I hope that he knows my immense pain at the loss of my brother was lightened, even a little, by the care he provided.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created to recognize and honor the compassionate care nurses provide every day to the patients they serve. It is celebrated in over 5,400 healthcare facilities and nursing schools in 34 countries.

Congratulations, Riley, and thank you for the patient-centered care you provide.

Bryn, a RN on MHMMC Portland’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, has received a DAISY Award for her care of a new mother and her baby. The nominator, a colleague of Bryn’s, wrote that Bryn went above and beyond to ensure the mother felt safe caring for her baby:

“Bryn had a personal appointment that she was planning to leave early for. The mother was nervous about holding her infant, given his unstable condition. Bryn encouraged her while simultaneously educating her about the benefits of holding an infant skin-to-skin. The mom was comforted by Bryn’s knowledge and support and was grateful to be able to participate in skin-to-skin care for the first time. After we got the mom and infant settled in together, the mom explained that she had hoped Bryn would be at her side to help her transition the infant back to the isolate. Bryn selflessly canceled her appointment to remain present for the family.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created to recognize and honor the compassionate care nurses provide every day to the patients they serve. It is celebrated in over 5,400 healthcare facilities and nursing schools in 34 countries.

Congratulations, Bryn!

Ross, a patient care technician on MHMMC Portland’s P6 unit, has earned a PETAL Award for the consistent, quality care he provides his patients. He was nominated by a colleague after a patient with dementia described Ross’s approach to patient care as “class.” The nominator shared:

“Ross consistently exhibits a level of excellence when caring for those with profound cognitive disorders, difficulties in communication and maintenance of behavioral control. He allows the most challenging patients to feel validated, respected and dignified. He anticipates their needs and aims to maintain their comfort and function. He assures the safety of all who are on the unit.”

The PETAL Award recognizes, rewards and celebrates the special skills and compassionate care provided by our nursing support staff. Congratulations, Ross!

“My patient looked at me and said, ‘you might’ve just saved my sight,’"

At MaineHealth Primary Care Family Medicine Norway, Clinical Supervisor Brianna Walker seated a longtime patient with diabetes in front of a sophisticated new retinal camera. She took images of his eyes that the camera’s AI technology scanned for diabetic retinopathy, a serious condition that can threaten vision. The camera quickly identified early signs of the condition, allowing for timely follow-up and care.

Stories like this are becoming increasingly common at MaineHealth Medical Group (MHMG) practices. When an initial pilot of the technology showed success in screening more patients, the Medical Group looked to expand use of the cameras to additional practices. In the last year, 24 cameras have been deployed. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3NfCu3z.
