Shalom House, Inc.

Shalom House, Inc. At Shalom House we believe that when people have the appropriate support they can get better and lead fulfilling lives in the community.

Shalom House offers hope for adults living with severe mental illness by providing an array of community based mental health services and a choice of quality housing that help people lead stable and fulfilling lives in the community. Our model for success is grounded on the following four bases:

Housing-

Shalom House provides a choice of affordable, decent housing ranging from transitional housing and group homes to independent apartments. Individualized Services-

Shalom House offers a variety of services to help our clients gain the skills and confidence they need to achieve their own goals and to successfully reintegrate into the community. These services include community integration, skills support, peer support and many others. Inclusive Atmosphere-

We believe that mental illness is best managed when consumers and providers of mental health services work together. We don't make decisions for our clients, we help them learn how to make their own choices and provide them with ongoing support to ensure success. Fighting the Stigma-

Shalom House works in the community to reduce the fear and stigma associated with mental illness so that those who suffer from mental illness may flourish in the mainstream of community life.

Today, we are celebrating the achievements of a woman we have been working with since 2020. Earlier this month she reached an incredible milestone: moving into her own independent apartment!

Our program staff supported her along the way, helping her develop the tools and confidence needed to take this step, and when it came time to move, our Basic Needs Fund helped cover moving expenses so that this transition could happen without any barriers.

Because of her hard work, the care of our staff, and your support of our Basic Needs Fund, she is now living on her own and continuing to build the life she has worked so hard for.

This Women’s History Month, we are proud to celebrate her progress, and are inspired by her tenacity to reach this goal. πŸ’š

"I finally feel human." These were the words our Development Manager, Emily, heard during a recent phone call with a client. Those words stayed with her long after the conversation ended. This client, a survivor of domestic violence and someone with lived experience with homeless, reached out during a time of crisis looking for help to move forward. What she found at Shalom House was a staff full of people dedicated to helping her find housing, bridge the gaps in her life, and provide her with a safe place to land. This Women's History Month, we honor the strength of this woman, and all women, who continue to move forward despite challenges that can make progress seem impossible.

In honor of Women's History Month, we want to recognize one of our newer board members, Tessa Metcalfe. Tessa joined the Shalom House Board of Directors in April of 2025, and as a Senior Property Manager at Avesta Housing, she has been a great addition. Tessa sought a spot on our board because she grew up close to someone with significant disabilities, and that experience shaped her passion for building communities where each person has the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and the support they deserve.

From Tessa: "I am deeply proud of the work of Shalom House and honored use my experience in affordable housing to contribute through my role on the Housing Committee."

We are so thankful for her leadership and expertise! πŸ’š

We are honored to share that Shalom House Art Program artists and artwork were featured in Julia Sweet's Policy Advocacy Strategy final project for her Master of Social Work at the University of New England. In this project, Julia discusses the importance of raising awareness of psychotic disorders and the impact of doing so.

The Art Program is a pillar of our work in providing a safe and healthy space for individuals living with mental illness, building community and developing healthy coping mechanisms through creativity.

We are excited to share her work and are hopeful that her project can lead to meaningful change.
Thank you, Julia, for your incredible work!

Today we are honoring a woman whose vision continues to shape the work we do today.

Eunice Frye (1852-1923) was a Mainer with a deep commitment to the Greater Portland community. As the first president of the Wayside Rest Home for Worthy Women, she dedicated her life to supporting women and helping make Portland a safer and more welcoming place for all.

The Eunice Frye Home Foundation supported the Shalom House Basic Needs Fund with a grant in 2025. This fund provides emergency financial assistance to our clients when they are faced with an unexpected crisis, helping them maintain stability during difficult moments. This Women's History Month, we honor Eunice's legacy. Her commitment to making the world a safer, more compassionate, more equal, place continues to inspire our work today.

In honor of Women's History Month, we will be highlighting the women that support and lead Shalom House.

We're kicking it off with one of our board members, Dr. Haley Pogachefsky! Haley joined the Shalom House Board of Directors in 2025. As a mental health occupational therapist, she helps people engage in activities that are meaningful to them, from the arts to professional skills, and even social relationships. We are thankful for her leadership and expertise this Women's History Month.

Love looks like a key in your hand and a door that locks behind you. A safe place to land. A place that's yours. 🏠 Stable housing changes everything. It's a vehicle for recovery, it's safe from the elements, it's somewhere that allows you to focus on your future. That's why we do this work, housing folks in 26 properties across Maine. πŸ’š

Love doesn’t always happen face-to-face. Sometimes, it happens behind a screen.

Our IT department keeps our systems running so staff can focus on what matters most, supporting our clients. From maintaining computers to managing data, their work helps ensure records stay secure, and stories are shared with care.

This is love in action: quietly making sure everything works so others can fully show up for those who need us.
