Classical Pearls

Classical Pearls Classical Pearls Herbal Formulas™ are unique Chinese herbal formulations designed for the treatmen

OUR APPROACH IS SIMPLE

We manage the sourcing, production and formulation of the highest quality ingredients into unique and potent formulations based on the classical medical texts, and fine-tuned to treat modern patients suffering from the complex diseases of our times. Herbal medicine was once the only modality to cure serious diseases. Today, the intricate alchemical principles and the experience based approach of traditional herbal science has become overshadowed by laboratory parameters—often to the detriment of clinical results. It is the mission of Classical Pearls to launch a return to the classical and clinic-based roots of Chinese herbal medicine. A RETURN TO THE CLINICAL POWER OF OUR ROOTS

Classical Pearls is proud to be part of an international movement that seeks to honor and restore the classical origins of Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine is a highly sophisticated science and deeply spiritual art form. We believe in trusting what history has taught us – that Chinese herbal formulation is based on simple foundational principles that are often ignored or misunderstood in the construct of modern TCM education. With our formulas and the core educational concepts behind them, our goal is to preserve the true clinical power and efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine. OUR FORMULAS HAVE EVOLVED FROM CLASSICAL MEDICAL TEXTS

Each of our remedies incorporates principles of classical formula design synthesized from the ancient texts of Oriental medicine and a variety of classical lineage approaches. Based on over two decades of clinical experience, tightly structured classical formulas have been combined and fine-tuned to the modern diseases of our time. It is our sincere hope that the study and use of the Classical Pearls series of products can help Oriental medicine practitioners increase their clinical efficacy and gain a better understanding of the time-honored principles of alchemical wisdom that are gradually being forgotten.

Sanqi 🌱, often called “three-seven root,” earns its name from the plant’s unique growth cycles and the traditional belief that the root is most potent after three years of growth and seven years of rest.

Here in a shaded mountain farm, Heiner explores why Sanqi is considered one of the most precious medicinals in the Chinese materia medica, and why farmers go to extraordinary lengths to protect it.

Because the plant is notoriously fragile and slow to mature, nearly all commercial plantations rely heavily on agricultural sprays. Finding sources that avoid these shortcuts is rare. These farmers are committed to growing Sanqi with integrity, which is why their work, and this herb, holds such immense value.

"At Soho Acupuncture by Jen Becker, we've been using Classical Pearls herbal formulas for over a decade, and they continue to be one of the most trusted and effective lines in our pharmacy. Their commitment to purity, classical formulation, and clinical results is unmatched.

Personally, I've used Classical Pearls in my own life and have witnessed firsthand how profoundly they can support healing. One of the most powerful experiences was watching a close family member experience significant improvement from a serious health condition while using a tailored Classical Pearls formula regimen. It was a reminder of just how potent and intelligent this herbal medicine can be when crafted with intention and integrity.

These formulas are a cornerstone of our practice and a reflection of our deep belief in the healing potential of Chinese herbal medicine."

It's and today we're highlighting Banxia Houpo Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction)!

This remedy first appeared 1,850 years ago in Zhang Zhongjing’s classic formula compendium, Essentials from the Golden Cabinet (Jingui yaolüe). Listed in the “Chapter on Miscellaneous Gynecological Disorders”, the remedy stands out by way of its highly specific indication “for women who feel as if there is a lump of roasted meat stuck in their throat.” This condition is now most often referred to as “plum-pit syndrome” (meihe qi), characterized by chronic discomfort in the throat region that is typically aggravated by emotional distress.

As one of the representative remedies in the pinellia family of herbs, Banxia Houpo Tang is a safe and efficient way to address a broad variety of counterflow issues afflicting the respiratory system, the digestive system, the nervous system, the endocrine system and the cardiovascular system.

Common diagnostic markers for these variegated afflictions are non-specific throat discomfort and symptoms of emotional distress.

Harvested by Expert Hands
In this third video, Heiner visits a farmer in Hubei who demonstrates the traditional method of harvesting Houpo bark.
Stripping the bark requires years of experience to protect the tree and ensure future growth. This kind of craftsmanship is passed down through generations — a reminder that true herbal quality comes from people as much as plants.

Houpo Sourcing pt2 🪵

In the second part of our Houpo sourcing series, Heiner climbs up to show a Magnolia tree that has been growing for nearly 100 years.
Quality Houpo begins with more than age — it depends on clean water, quiet surroundings, and farms that protect the integrity of the land.
Here, in this peaceful environment, the herb develops its deep aroma and strong medicinal properties that classical texts praise.

Its and this week were highlighting Ease Pearls 🍃

The comprehensive design of Ease Pearls is an attempt to combine the qi moving, detoxifying and emotional harmonizing benefits of the two most famous and effective Bupleurum formulas in Chinese medicine. It unites the 3rd century remedy Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) and the 12th century remedy Xiaoyao San (Ease Powder), and is further enhanced by the drying and descending effect of Banxia Houpo Tang (Pinellia and Magnolia Bark Decoction) and the moistening effect of Shengmai San (Generate the Pulse Powder).

Both base remedies address congestion of the shaoyang system (Gallbladder and Triple Warmer), with a particular focus on treating and preventing all problems that can be classified as “wood over-controlling earth.” In general, Ease Pearls can be used as a crucial base or add-on remedy whenever the use of bupleurum is required. It is particularly suitable for all pathologies that can be classified with the terms qi stagnation or shaoyang disorder.

Sourcing Houpo (Magnolia bark)🪵

In Classical Chinese Medicine, Houpo moves Qi, transforms dampness, and opens the chest, helping to ease fullness, bloating, and sensations of “stuckness” in both the body and emotions.

Its warm, fragrant nature harmonizes the middle and supports clear, unencumbered breath, making it a key ingredient in formulas such as Banxia Houpo Tang and Ping Wei San.

Every layer of this bark reflects generations of craftsmanship and care — a reminder that true medicine begins with the integrity of its source.

🌱 Where Houpo Begins
Before it becomes one of the most important herbs for transforming dampness and supporting digestion, Houpo begins here—among rows of young Magnolia trees cared for by local growers.
In this first video of our Houpo series, Heiner walks through the fields where quality truly starts: with the soil, the seasons, and the people who steward the land.
