BREAKING: New research has found that applying a full-body moisturizer to a child every day starting before 9 weeks of age can lower the chance of them developing eczema by age two.

The CASCADE Study, led by OHSU's Dr. Eric Simpson, was a randomized clinical trial that included nearly 1,300 babies from across 25 clinics in the U.S. The study examined a comparison of babies who did, and did not receive daily moisturizer, and found that those who received the daily moisturizer had a 16-24% lower risk of developing eczema by age 2.

This research identifies a safe, easy, and potentially practical preventative measure for eczema, especially for babies not already identified as high-risk. To learn more, including the full publication and interviews visit the link in our bio!

Meet new resident Sarah Mullen, MD:

My name is Sarah Mullen and I am excited to be starting my dermatology residency at OHSU. I am from Omaha, Nebraska, went to college at University of Iowa, then returned to Omaha for medical school. I took a gap year, during which I went on an international medical service trip and worked at Nebraska's Department of Health and Human Services on COVID-19. That's where I met my husband, who is an epidemiologist. I have been in Portland for my preliminary medicine year at Providence Portland Medical Center.

Since being here, I have been going to CorePower yoga and enjoying exploring local restaurants. I am looking for an affordable plant store, but for now my living room jungle is stable in size. We have hit a few long hikes but are always hoping for more recommendations. I'm excited to meet everyone!

My name is Ghida EL Banna, and I am very excited to be joining the Dermatology Department at OHSU. I grew up in Lebanon and came to the USA in 2013 to study at Smith College in Northampton, MA. I went to Stanford University School of Medicine and completed my internship year at the Mass General Hospital in Boston.

I moved to Oregon with my family, and this is our first time living here. We enjoy exploring new libraries, parks, and farms with our toddler. I also enjoy cooking and baking and am always on the look out for new recipes!

Meet new resident Erin McClure, MD:

My name is Erin McClure. I am so grateful to be starting my dermatology residency at OHSU! I feel like I won the lottery matching here. I grew up in the Seattle area, went to the University of South Florida for medical school, and I did a research year in Merkel cell carcinoma at the University of Washington.

Things I like to do for fun include getting out on the water (paddleboarding, kayaking, boating), exploring the city (visiting new restaurants, music venues, parks), axe throwing, pickleball, traveling, and spending time with my family, friends, and cat! I am excited to get to know the OHSU dermatology team better!
