Jewish Family & Child Service, together with other Jewish community organizations, is working to better understand the food-related needs of our community. We are asking community members to please take a few moments to fill out our short Portland Jewish Community Food Initiative Survey. Your responses are confidential and will help shape the programs and resources we develop together. Every voice matters — thank you for helping us build a stronger, more caring community.

Today is Earth Day, whose central message this year is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, focusing on the importance of working together to make environmental progress. All of us can make a change. What will you do to benefit the earth?

Interested in Earth Day through a Jewish lens? Here are three core Jewish values to keep in mind as you consider that every day is earth day: dor l'dor (from generation to generation); bal tashchit (do not destroy); and adamah (guardians of the earth).

At April’s Senior Social Hour, JFCS and CNS seniors enjoyed the powerful and moving film, "Eleanor the Great". With classic movie snacks in hand (popcorn, twizzlers, and junior mints — yum!), we enjoyed a movie that beautifully balanced grief, humor, friendship, and loss. Thank you, Congregation Neveh Shalom, for partnering with us and hosting this special afternoon.

Join us at the next Senior Social Hour on May 19 at EJC!

JFCS, Congregation Beth Israel, WRJ/Beth Israel Sisterhood, and Congregation Neveh Shalom Sisterhood came together to host the 65th JFCS Community Seder earlier this week—and what a joyful celebration it was.

More than 70 clients, family members, and volunteers gathered for this beautiful Seder led by CBI’s Cantor Rayna Green. The afternoon began with sweet singing of the Passover story by children from the Jennie’s preschool class, and included students from Portland Jewish Academy asking the Four Questions. One guest, a Holocaust Survivor, shared that celebrating Passover was forbidden when she was growing up, and how grateful she felt to now celebrate freely in community.

We are grateful to the dozens of volunteers who helped bring this gathering to life—from planning to setting beautiful tables and driving the clients to and from the event. Thank you as well to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany for helping make this meaningful afternoon possible. It was a beautiful celebration of tradition, resilience, and community joy.

Join JFCS‘ Senior Social Hour and Congregation Neveh Shalom’s Wondering Jews 65+ for a special movie matinee of Eleanor the Great, starring June Squibb as a sharp-tongued 94-year-old woman navigating an unexpected new chapter after a loss.

We’ll enjoy popcorn and classic movie snacks while watching Eleanor relocate to New York, where a small misunderstanding at a support group grows into a larger story - both funny and touching - about memory, identity, and the complicated ways we carry the people we love with us.

Come for the movie, stay for the company—this is a relaxed afternoon to gather, connect, and enjoy a good film together. Free to attend but RSVP required. Learn more and RSVP here: https://members.nevehshalom.org/event/MMETG26
