Cloonagh House, Ballyforan, then and now, 1972 v 2023. The last person to live here was James Egan who passed away in 1974 (James or 'Jim' Egan is visible in the upper photo at front of house). The house was built in the 18th century and was owned by Fallon's for many years, including James Fallon, who was catholic Bishop of Elphin for over 30 years, he died at Cloonagh in 1786. Later occupied by the White family, then by the Bayleys (who came from Clara, Offaly), the Bayleys married into the Egan family. Sold by the Land Commission in the mid 1970's, the roof was subsequently removed and the slates sold. A beautiful cut-stone coach-house was also demolished around this time. The house is quite unusual as it has no windows at the back or sides. (upper photo from the Cronin Collection, courtesy of Willie Gacquin, this is a very rare colour photo, have not seen another one)
