Sleep is essential for growing minds. In recognition of World Sleep Day, we’re highlighting how healthy sleep habits support kids’ and teens’ mental health, mood, and learning. Sleep helps young people regulate emotions, manage stress, and stay focused at school. But many families struggle with sleep routines, especially with busy schedules and screen time.

Here are a few tips to help kids get the rest they need:

🔹 Kids ages 6-12 need 9-12 hours of sleep each night. 🔹 Teens need 8-10 hours.
🔹 Try to keep consistent bedtimes and wake-up times.
🔹 Turn off screen 30-60 minutes before bed.
🔹 Create a calm nighttime routine.

When Clint enrolled in the Parent Mentor Program, he wasn’t sure what to expect. He’d turned a corner in recovery but still had a long path ahead of him to reunify with his children. He was surprised to find out his mentor was someone he’d once used drugs with, now clean and raising his two children – the exact thing Clint greatly wanted. In his mentor, Clint saw someone like him; someone he could trust.

Years later, Clint is now a Parent Mentor himself. He has custody of his two daughters and his niece. He mentors dads working through substance abuse treatment and family reunification, using his experiences as a roadmap to guide them. He is passionate about working with dads, a group he sees as being largely pushed to the side by the family reunification system. A father himself, he wants to acknowledge the capacity of men to be caregivers and give them the support to recover while keeping their parenthood in mind.

Did you know that young children are expelled or suspended from early education settings at rates more than three times higher than K-12 students nationwide? This can deeply interrupt learning and harm long-term development. One of the main goals of Morrison’s Infant & Early Childhood Consultation Program (IECMHC) is to reduce expulsion rates among young children.

Our two-pronged prevention-based approach revolves around partnering with the adults who care for young children in early learning settings and also working with families directly. This program helps prevent exclusionary practices by equipping caregivers with practical strategies, reflective support, and coaching, so children get the support they need to learn and grow. Our CEO and VP of Development had the opportunity to meet yesterday with Julia Brim-Edwards, Multnomah County District 3 Commissioner, to share more about the work we do here at Morrison Child and Family Services. We’re encouraged by our shared priorities, particularly addressing the critical impacts of mental health and substance use disorder on children and families across our community. And, of course, Flapjack the goat made sure to steal the spotlight during the meeting...

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and support teens in building healthy, respectful relationships. Dating violence isn’t always obvious. It can show up as constant monitoring, pressure to share passwords or locations, or isolation from friends and family. In today’s digital world, these behaviors are often framed as “care,” but they can be serious red flags. This month, we encourage teens and caregivers to look beyond appearances and focus on how a relationship feels. Healthy relationships are built on trust, respect, and boundaries—not fear or control.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing warning signs, help is available. Confidential support for teens is available through Love is Respect, an extension of the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Text LOVEIS to 22522 to connect with a trained advocate.

22% of children and adolescents worldwide show disordered eating, and more than 29 million Americans will face an eating disorder in their lifetime. This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. As a youth mental health organization, we feel it’s important to recognize and raise awareness for the immense impact that eating disorders and disordered eating have on kids and teens.

While the data is troubling, help is available. To learn more about eating disorder signs and symptoms and find support resources, visit nationaleatingdisorders.org or call the ANAD Eating Disorder Helpline at 1-888-375-7767.

Flapjack takes on the capitol! If you haven’t met Flapjack yet, he’s one of Morrison’s newly adopted therapeutic goats at our SAGE program (swipe to the end to see the real Flapjack).

As a token of our appreciation for some of Oregon’s greatest champions for kids and families, we gifted mini Flapjacks to Senator Reynolds, Sen Lieber, Representative Sanchez, Rep Pham, and Rep Nosse at the capitol yesterday.

Thank you to these legislators for supporting our work of helping kids and families when they need us most. Follow along for more of Flapjack’s adventures!

In November, two youth in our SAGE Residential Program took initiative in a powerful way—organizing a food drive as part of their program graduation project. Their goal was simple but meaningful: provide food boxes to families enrolled in Morrison programs during a time when SNAP benefits were not being distributed. Through the branded flyers they designed and shared, these young leaders collected more than 1,600 items and put together 36 food boxes.

The impact was immediate and deeply felt. When one family from our early childhood program received their food box, the mom was thrilled to choose an item—then overwhelmed with gratitude when she learned the entire box was hers to keep.

While the two youth have since graduated from SAGE, a few other youth who contributed are interested in continuing the project and helping even more kids and families. We are so proud of these SAGE youth for their compassion, creativity, and commitment to giving back.

It’s Children’s Mental Health Week, so today we’re diving into one of the root causes behind increasing rates of anxiety and depression among children.

Children today engage in fewer risky behaviors than past generations, yet anxiety and depression are on the rise. As kids spend less time in unstructured, face-to-face play, many are internalizing their struggles. Research shows that free play and outdoor time are essential to healthy development, building confidence, creativity, and emotional well-being. Supporting children means balancing safety with space to explore and grow.

At Morrison, we support children and families through an array of specialized programs—from outpatient mental health care, to home visits, to community-based services—working toward a future where every child gets what they need to thrive. Learn more about our services at morrisonkids.org.
