To counteract that we need to stop and take a few deep breaths.

Breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Breathe out through your mouth for a count of 8. Hold for a count of four.

Repeat until you feel calm.

Find a breathing technique that works for you, because you can change your breath in just a few seconds, even if other remedies aren’t available to you.

Being dehydrated stresses our body.

The mother of a childhood friend seemed to have only one response to all the bumps and bruises we would come in to bandage.

“Take a drink of water first,” she’d say as she handed us a glass.

I always thought that was odd, but now I know that a drink of water can help calm a situation down, and ease the sting of a skinned knee.

When things start to feel like too much, it is amazing what a ten-minute walk around the block will do.

When you feel like reaching for the pain reliever for that headache, maybe a large glass of water and a five-minute dance session is in order.

When you are feeling stressed, do a quick check in to see if you have been getting enough uninterrupted sleep.

I recommend that you get at least 8 hours a night on a regular schedule. Go to bed at the same time every day and get up at the same time.

When we are dealing with illness and stressful situations, though, we may need up to 12 hours a day of sleep.

More sleep may be what your body is telling you with your stress symptoms.
