We're excited to announce that Lockett Taylor will be joining Yoga Refuge!

Lockett has been teaching at for many years and she will continue to offer her 3 weekly classes at Yoga Refuge NW. You can practice with her in person or at home beginning next Tuesday!

Join Lockett for
Hatha Yoga Tues/Thur 9:30-11am (hybrid)
Yin Yoga Wednesdays 7:30-8:45pm (studio)
at Yoga Refuge NW

Lockett began practicing yoga in 1998. Walking out of her first class, she thought to herself, "Well I guess I'll do that for the rest of my life…”. It was a quiet knowing that would soon direct her life’s work. She went on to study Ashtanga Vinyasa and Iyengar yoga extensively with Timo Jimenez here in Portland, and completed teacher training and advanced teacher training with Tias Little in Santa Fe. Her practice and teaching reflect her experience with those traditions, as well as a broader creativity and intuition the she has developed over decades. Many other teachers have influenced her over the years and she is grateful for their illuminations of the path.

In Lockett's classes you will be guided to work at your own pace towards gaining strength and flexibility while cultivating the breath and mindfulness. She believes yoga is a practice of patience and determination, an increasingly subtle comprehension of the balance between effort and ease. You will be given many options in the poses so that classes are accessible to everyone and gentle assists for refining alignment and going further into the poses. With a somewhat slower pace and longer format, you will be encouraged to dive in deep.

Lockett also teaches yin yoga with a restorative component which involves passive, longer holds of poses which work to release chronic tension in the connective tissues helping to restore energy, provide healing, reduce stress and soothe the mind.

It is her absolute joy and privilege to support her students in their journey towards a healthier body and a peaceful mind.

Amanda's self-massage class is coming to our NW location! Many students have asked if we can add another Release class to our schedule, and now with the opening of our second studio it's finally happening. 🌟

Release with Amanda St. Clair
Tuesdays from 7:30-8:45pm
at Yoga Refuge Northwest

This class is designed to unwind tension and restore mobility through gentle movement and self myofascial release techniques (a form of self-massage). The slow nature is deeply nourishing for the nervous system, while the practice of release with the Tune Up balls will support a feeling of ease in the body by improving circulation and stimulating the lymphatic system.

Amanda aims to cater each class towards the specific needs of those who attend, and provide individualized support so each student can better learn how to utilize the Tune Up balls. Please note that sometimes this release work can create a sense of discomfort while working into the soft tissues of the body, and there are ways to control the level of sensation you are experiencing in a release.

This is a great class for those seeking to alleviate chronic pain, or a form of active recovery to complement fast-paced, athletic movement practices.

Join Kate for
Vinyasa Flow Mon/Wed 9:30-10:30am (hybrid)

Kate Sumanoharan began her yoga journey in 2005 with an Ashtanga practice in Reno, NV. Over the years, she frequently returned to yoga during transformative stages of her life, ultimately finding solace and strength through the practice as a pathway for trauma healing.

Her path deepened with Michele Loew’s 200-Hr Yoga Teacher Training, where the teachings of both Michele and Ian LeMasters inspired her to immerse herself more fully in yoga. She went on to complete her 500-Hr Yoga Teacher Certification and is currently studying trauma-informed yoga therapy with Sarahjoy Marsh.

As a teacher, Kate’s focus is Vinyasa yoga. She is passionate about cultivating community at Yoga Refuge in NW Portland, where she is grateful to share practice and connection. She is dedicated to deepening her own practice and supporting students in cultivating equanimity, joy, compassion, and loving-kindness, which in turn fosters a ripple effect toward greater collective consciousness.

Join Katie for
Vinyasa Flow Tuesdays 6-7:15pm (hybrid)

Katie has been dedicated to yoga since 2015, consistently returning to the practice during transformative periods in her life. Through yoga, she has found a path to reconnect with her true self, using it to navigate the world and discover clarity and stillness both internally and externally. She embarked on a 500-hour training course with Michele Loew to enhance her practice, where she discovered her passion for teaching and sharing yoga in ways that facilitated her own healing journey.

As a yoga teacher, Katie combines Vinyasa and Hatha styles, emphasizing breathwork and conscious, compassionate awareness of the mind. She holds the belief that true healing originates within and that yoga can create a ripple effect to heal the world. Katie enriches her classes with philosophy and lineage-based teachings, offering practitioners of all levels valuable insights to carry beyond the mat.

"We have a tendency to think in terms of doing and not in terms of being. We think that when we're not doing anything, we're wasting our time.

But that's not true. Our time is first of all for us to be.

To be what?
To be alive,
to be peaceful,
to be joyful,
to be loving.

And this is what the world needs the most. We all need to train ourselves in our way of being, and that is the ground for all action. Our quality of being determines our quality of doing."

“Take Root Yoga School was a wonderful experience. I benefited greatly from the deep intentionality in the design and ex*****on of the curriculum. I enjoyed the breadth and depth of content that was covered - it sparked my passion for this work in a way that I never expected (but welcomed wholeheartedly!). The heart and soul that Danielle, Heather, and all of the guest teachers put into the modules was clear at every session. The supportive community and thoughtful guidance made the journey even more meaningful, leaving me inspired and prepared to share this knowledge with others.
