May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and data released last month by the American Medical Association showed that 41.9% of physicians reported experiencing at least one sign of burnout.

OMA Executive Committee member Dr. Kirk Wolfe remarked on the importance of physician and PA well-being in these very challenging times: “Taking care of ourselves — and those in our care — is how we’re getting through this.”

A message for your patients from Rethink the Drink in collaboration with the Oregon Health Authority:

Older adults are drinking more than previous generations did at the same age. This increases the chance of getting dementia, diabetes, and cancer, and can also make these kinds of conditions worse. Alcohol also can make medicines less effective or cause harmful side effects. But no matter how old you are, drinking less, or not at all, is always better for your health.

Yesterday, two OMA priority bills were signed into law by Governor Kotek, and OMA Board of Trustees member Dr. Jennifer McCall was right there at the podium to mark the moment. HB 4088 protects Oregon clinicians from being punished for providing care that is legal under Oregon law. SB 1598 ensures patients can still access vaccines without cost barriers, despite confusing federal guidance. This is what showing up for clinicians and patients looks like.

Oregon's 2025 corporate practice of medicine law, known as Senate Bill 951, was meant to be tested — and Stapleton v. PeaceHealth was the first lawsuit to do that.

Today, in federal court, the parties announced a tentative settlement that pauses the case for 14 days while PeaceHealth and Eugene Emergency Physicians work out the details of a new contract. EEP, a well-established local physician group, was due to be replaced by a new group managed by an out-of-state management services organization. That plan raised issues about compliance with the corporate practice of medicine law.

A settlement may resolve this dispute, but it highlights the challenges and complexity of SB 951 that will need some post-case analysis and possible legislative updates. At the OMA, we will continue to advocate for laws that support physicians and PAs and protect the integrity of medical decisions.
