The best way to relieve stress and anxiety?

Allow yourself to feel what you're feeling in your body, without interpretation.

As your mind comes in and tries to tell you that something feels painful or bad, or tries to distract you with thoughts about the past or future, just keep bringing your attention back to the sensations in your body.

If your body wants to move, shake, twist, stretch, kick, or you spontaneously feel like making a noise or find yourself wanting to cry, let yourself.

If you're in a place where you can't do that, find a quiet private moment later when you can.

Your body already knows what it needs to do in order to heal, sometimes you just need to get out of the way and let it.

Emotions are like a river of energy that flows through your body.

When you push against the flow by avoiding your emotions, it's like you're building a dam inside of yourself and the pressure gets stronger.

In order to heal anxiety, you have to learn to feel safe feeling what you're feeling.

It can take time, and it's helpful to have a compassionate guide by your side to reassure you on this journey.

When you feel anxious, the tendency is to become hyper-focused on the thoughts in your mind.

The issue is that the thoughts in your mind are trying to find a way to help you escape from the stress you feel in your body, but by fighting against the stress you only end up making it stronger.

If you want to feel less anxious, you have to learn to feel safe even when a stress response is active in your body.

And one of the best ways to do that is to practice feeling into the sensations in your body, even and especially when they're uncomfortable.

By shifting your focus from your mind to your body, you still feel the stress, but you don't make it worse by trying to "fix" or escape it, and that's how it's allowed to transform.

It's like you're allowing the river to flow instead of building a dam, or trying to single-handedly divert it (an impossible task!)

Awareness.

Trauma and stress patterns prevent you from being fully present in the moment that you’re in, but so long as you begin to be aware of how that process is happening in you, you are already starting to heal.

"Think positive!" You hear them say, and as if on cue, all your mind can think of are all of the potentially catastrophic events that can happen in the next 5 minutes.

Try as you might, thoughts are not controllable. They are conditioned reactions from the past whose job is to promote the survival of your body.

You can start to become aware of your thoughts and intentionally replace negative thoughts with positive ones, but that won't make negative thinking go away entirely.

A better strategy is to question your thoughts' validity.

Some thoughts are helpful, even when they're "negative." Most are just limited suggestions based on past experience.

To free yourself, you have to learn to take your thoughts less seriously.

How?

Most of our suffering is avoidable.

We get into the habit of judging the world and our lives, creating preferences and aversions, imagining that we know what is best for us, and throwing a hissy fit if we don't get what we want.

You feel this resistance in your body.

Anytime you feel stress or tightness, you're closing yourself off.

But in order to experience life fully, in order to love the moment that you're in, this resistance has to soften.

And the best way to soften resistance is to recognize it, allow it, and welcome it into your experience too.

Because when you love even the experience of resistance, you align yourself with the love that you seek.
