In honor of Case Management Week, we would like to recognize our outstanding team. Here at Shriners Children's, Care Management is an umbrella that includes RN care managers, social workers and interpretive services. Together, this team helps patients and families with their health and social needs by assisting with managing a diagnosis, illness or injury. They also provide resources, coordinate medical care as well as social/emotional support. They help prepare for surgical admission, discharge planning and patient education, all while providing patient-centered care. Care Management is also involved in utilization management, which includes obtaining prior authorization, concurrent reviews, and peer-to-peers to obtain authorization from insurance companies.

The Spanish medical interpreters accompany our Spanish-speaking patients and families to bridge linguistic and cultural barriers during their interactions throughout the hospital. Their services are integral to the international patient program by providing communication before, during and after the family’s stay. The interpreters also assist with translation of education documents and medical reports. We appreciate all you do!

What a wonderful evening we had at this year's Taste of Fall event, hosted by Battle Creek Cellars. Great food and beverages, a silent auction, speeches from patient alumni all made for an intimate, memorable experience. Thank to all who attended, and for your continued support, which truly does help us provide the most amazing care anywhere. And special thanks to our generous sponsor, Fluor Corporation.

Happy Medical Assistant Recognition Day! Before seeing the physician, our amazing Medical Assistants review medical histories, check vital signs and explain any required treatments or procedures to make our patients and families feel at ease. Sterile Processing technicians are the backbone of our surgery department. Each instrument used in surgery must first go through the rigorous and detail-oriented process of sterile processing. The first step is decontamination, where all instrumentation is thoroughly hand washed and inspected. The next step is to put the instrumentation through the washer with specialized cleaning chemical. The next step is assembly, which is when staff carefully inspect each individual item to ensure cleanliness and proper functionality. The final step is to sterilize the items and send them to surgery.

Our outstanding team processes approximately 35,000 individual instruments per month. The attention to detail they provide is critical to ensure that our surgeons have what they need to perform surgeries safely. Thank you for all you do! This week we celebrate our outstanding Supply Chain team in honor of Healthcare Supply Chain Week. This department manages all of the materials that come into and go out of our hospital. These packages include items ordered that reside in the storeroom, department special orders and research items. In August alone, the department received over 4,200 items.

They also ship every single item that goes out from Portland, whether to an outside clinic, to headquarters or to an individual. Orders are placed through the department for the 750 items stocked in the storeroom, and in August they issued over 20,000 items!

The department also maintains all stock in the clinical departments, including counting, entering and filling orders and delivering to staff. Supply Chain works closely with home office buyers as well as accounts payable to streamline on-time ordering and delivery. Thank you for all that you do, team! “It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since my amputation. Looking back, I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m beyond grateful to Shriners Children’s Portland for everything they’ve done for me. Most of my time there has been spent with Physical Therapy and the orthotics and prosthetics lab (POPS).

My journey began on October 8, 2020, the day of my amputation. Six weeks later, my stitches came out, and that December, I started two weeks of twice-daily physical therapy before receiving my first prosthetic leg. Since then, I’ve gone through eight prosthetic legs in five years. In those early months, I constantly second-guessed myself, wondering if I had made the right decision. Today, I can say with confidence that I did.

Every now and then, I experience phantom bone and nerve pain, but it’s nothing compared to the pain I lived with before—pain that was there every day, all day. I plan on working either at Shriners Children’s Portland or at one of the other Shriners Children’s locations across the country.” – Maria

This week is National Physicians Assistant Week, and we would like to recognize our excellent team. Our Physician Assistants play an essential role in keeping our patients safe and healthy before and after surgery. They see patients in the clinic and even assist in the operating room. In addition to being involved with our spine and general orthopedic clinics, they provide excellent care through our walk-in fracture and sports injury clinic every day. Jessica’s relationship with Shriners Children’s began when she was seven years old. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three, her family struggled to find adequate care for her until they were referred to Shriners Children’s Portland. From then until middle school, she went through intensive physical and occupational therapy, including multiple serial castings to gain the physical functions she needed to live her best life.

“I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing without the care I received at Shriners Children’s Portland,” she said.

Fast forward to the year 2000, when Jessica finished nursing school at the University of Portland and answered a newspaper ad for a pilot nursing program targeted to recent graduates at Shriners Children’s Portland. The rest is history. She was recently recognized for 25 years of service, including 20 as a charge nurse, and she still loves what she does. Thank you for all that you’ve done and continue to do!

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and we invited our patients and families to design this year's anti-bullying button as we ramp up for Unity Day (October 22). Their creativity amazed us so much that we chose two winning designs we wanted to share, "Be a Buddy" and "All Are Welcome."
