Scott was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was 4 years old. His story is one of overcoming obstacles with an unwavering determination that led him to be the executive director of INCIGHT, a non-profit with a mission to help others that are experiencing disabilities.

When he was 4, Scott’s family noticed that he was having some trouble getting up from the ground and his walk started to look different. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

It's Health Unit Coordinators (HUC) Week, and time to shine the spotlight on our excellent team that does so much for our patients behind the scenes. Our HUCs:

***Facilitate communication between inpatient units, outpatient clinics and procedural areas.
***Coordinate the flow of information between patients, families, nursing staff, providers and other departments.
***Support clinical workflow by managing physician orders, coordinating admissions and discharges and scheduling tests or procedures.
***Ensure timely documentation and accurate record-keeping and assist with non-clinical administrative tasks, allowing nurses and providers to focus more time on direct patient care.

Their attention to detail, ability to multitask and calm presence help maintain efficiency, safety and compassion in the delivery of care. The HUC team is an indispensable part of the Shriners Children’s Portland family—thank you for all you do!

Meet Gary, who remembers playing in the 1955 Oregon East West Shrine Game and still has the t-shirt! His favorite memory from the experience was getting to tour the hospital, Shriners Children’s Portland, where he was blown away by the work being done. The Oregon East West Shrine Game has been supporting Shriners Children’s Portland for over 74 years!

When she was 11, Merryn was diagnosed with a benign tumor in her sciatic nerve, which affected functionality in her leg and foot. The team at Shriners Children's Portland presented her family with many options, including a surgical option, carefully weighing the pros and cons of each. Read the whole story:

We here in the Pacific Northwest LOVE our beautiful outdoors. Summer is a great time to hike in the gorge, go camping at Lost Lake or backpacking in the wilderness. So get out there, have fun and be safe, especially when it comes to campfires.
