There are two key types of genetic testing in cancer care. One analyzes a patient’s DNA to identify inherited mutations that may increase cancer risk. The other examines the tumor’s DNA to help tailor treatment to its specific genetic profile. Both tests are typically completed within a few weeks just using saliva or blood samples. Learn more about genetic testing at ahlink.org/4nQ3Iug.

On Thursday, October 16, we joined organizations around the world in The Great Shakeout, simulating how or hospital and clinics would respond in the event of an earthquake. From pausing usual activities to duck and cover (where appropriate and not disruptive to immediate patient care) to filling out simulated after action reports and standing up and simulated command center, these activities help us test our emergency plans and make sure we're ready if the unexpected happens.

Thank you to the dedicated associates and providers who take this work seriously.

It can seem like teens are glued to their cellphones. They keep us connected with our teens, especially during the schoolyear, when the family is heading different directions everyday. But they can also have a negative impact on their mental health. More screen time and social media use can lead to an increase in depression, negative body image, poor-quality sleep and stress. If you’re wondering how to help your teen set healthy boundaries with screens, visit ahlink.org/3OpWFIT for tips.

Uncover the impact of screen time on teen mental health. Learn about depression, anxiety and setting healthy boundaries for a balanced digital lifestyle.

Heart attacks are not just a man’s problem. A recent study from the American Heart Association found women are at a higher risk than men of dying within five years of their first heart attack.

Even the so-called widow-maker heart attack can strike women. In our latest blog post, we share what makes this type so dangerous, how women experience heart attacks differently and what you can do to reduce your risk. Visit ahlink.org/4eluq8U to read it.

A social worker with Adventist Health, Ann brought her trademark strength and optimism to her cancer diagnosis. Although breast cancer is part of her story, it does not define who she is. She is a sister, a wife, a mother of two — and she is more than breast cancer.

Ann took action when she felt a lump in her right breast. You can take control of your health too. Visit AdventistHealth.org/BreastHealth to schedule a mammogram today.

"I've lost over a third of myself!"

Catie Purrett pulls her car up to a Portland service station, ready to fuel up. She reaches down to the floor, pulls the lever and pops the gas cap.

“Catie, do you realize what you just did?” her husband says from the passenger seat.

John has noticed something exciting: For the first time in many years, Catie didn’t have to take off her seatbelt, open the door, and lean out to pull the gas lever. She’s lost so much weight, she can now reach down and pop the cap in one smooth move. Easy.

“I had been so embarrassed for so long, always having to open my door,” Catie says. “My husband looked at me and realized even before I did that I had done something really cool.”

Catie’s unexpected success, less than a year after having weight-loss surgery at Adventist Health Portland, is one of many surprises that pop up daily and make her smile.

Cancer treatments have come a long way. According to Dr. Jekwon Yeh, modern chemotherapy is far more patient-friendly than it was in the past, with fewer side effects and better options for managing symptoms. Radiation therapy has also advanced, with oncologists now using precise 3D planning to minimize exposure and reduce toxicity. All of these advancements are creating safer, more effective care.

Seen a report of your screentime lately? We’ve all been using our phones and computers more and more. And screentime use has its upsides: staying informed, entertained and connected with friends and family. But that can also cause an increase in depression, negative body image, poor-quality sleep and stress. Visit ahlink.org/3OpWFIT to learn how limiting the time you spend on your phone or computer can make you feel better.
