At the deepest level, you do know what you need. AND it can take time to sort through the layers of conditioning telling us to self-abandon in the name of 'belonging,' but I assure you, you do know.
And when we get stuck in this place of ruminating all over hell and back it's because we're disconnected from that inner voice. We're stuck in a place of deep internal conflict.
We fear that if we advocate for ourselves, we'll threaten the connection, or we'll no longer be wanted. And sometimes, that will be the case.
Many have spent enormous periods of their lives in relationship with people who can't see them; with people who aren't able to be present with their own needs & feelings, and so they aren't really interested in holding space for yours.
And so this work begins within you; by noticing when you're ruminating and spinning out, and getting clear on what would really feel 'right' to your heart and body. And it often means going against some sort of social norm - norms that keep you connected friends, family, and colleagues.
Sometimes we'll just have to remind ourselves of what we're willing to do and just shift our behavior to hold the boundary. Often, we'll have to actually communicate and let someone know.
Advocating for our needs will often disrupt some longstanding patterns, and it will be difficult initially.
But if you keep down that path, if you keep listening, keep trusting your inner voice, keep being willing to make mistakes and to learn from them, it will become more intuitive.
You'll begin to find friends and loved ones who can really see you; who can sit with you in moments of discomfort. Who you feel safe around, and who you really love supporting.
Who are some of the people who set loving boundaries in your life? Who do you feel safe setting boundaries with?
The Relationship Management Workshop begins today at 3pm - you can still register until noon - there are a couple of spots left. We'll talk all about giving and receiving feedback, conflict, holding space, and so much more.
