North by Northeast Community Health Center

North by Northeast Community Health Center North by Northeast Community Health Center is an organization that was created in response to Hurricane Katrina.

A pastor and a Jewish doctor began a clinic that was rooted in partnership based in faith, friendship, and a passion for community service. African American residents of Multnomah County suffer from health disparities which place them and their families at risk. When high blood pressure and diabetes are left untreated, complications such as heart disease and stroke can devastate families and cause a downward economic spiral. We believe these health inequities can - and must - be eliminated. North by Northeast is a safe and welcoming place, one where people find medical care that meets their needs in a culturally respectful way.

Did you know that 1 in 3 Black blood donors can help people with sickle cell disease? Sickle cell is the most common inherited blood disease in the U.S. and mostly affects people of African descent. Many patients need regular blood transfusions to prevent pain, strokes, and organ damage. Because Black donors often have rare blood types that match better, their donations are very important to help save and improve lives.

We are excited to share a new initiative our incredible Master Recyclers are working on right now. Over the past few months, Alberta Street has seen an increase in graffiti tagging on buildings, and with a passion for our community, our amazing Master Recyclers are stepping up to help! They are going around the neighborhood to paint over graffiti and help us keep our neighborhood looking great.

If you are a business on Alberta between Martin Luther King Blvd and 15th Avenue, we would love to offer support in cleaning up graffiti on your building. If you're interested in this free assistance, please contact us at graffiti@nxneclinic.org.

Our impact not only happens within the clinic walls, but also in our parking lot! This summer, we handed out over 400 boxes of fresh produce to patients and community members, thanks to our partners Mudbone and CareOregon, along with our dedicated Patient Wellness Council members.

Also, don't forget we have a sharps disposal box in our parking lot too! Many community members and patients stop by daily to safely dispose of their sharps, and we encourage you to do the same!

Every month, our incredible Primary Care Provider, Karletia, works hard to bring more education to our community members and patients about various health awareness months displayed on our Community Wellness board. This month, we are celebrating Ultraviolet Radiation, Vitamin D, and Skin Cancer Awareness Month. While we will be posting helpful tips from the board on Wednesdays throughout the month, we also invite you to stop by the clinic and see the board in person.

Proud to have NxNE Board member and patient Derwin Cunningham speak alongside Senator Ron Wyden, Congresswoman Janelle Bynum and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici about saving Medicaid. Derwin shared how access to Medicaid made a huge difference in his own health and life, and he spoke as a Board member about the positive, stabilizing impact it’s had on North by Northeast as an organization. Thanks for sharing your story, Derwin, and thank you Senator Wyden and Reps Bynum and Bonamici for working hard to save Medicaid!

Today, more than ever, we celebrate and acknowledge Juneteenth. 160 years ago, the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were told they were free from the chains that held them and many generations before them in slavery. Just four years ago, Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday under the Biden administration. Today is a day of reflection on the ongoing fight for racial justice and equity. We hope you take some time today to reflect on this moment in our nation’s history, and we hope you join us for the parade on Saturday!

We are the only medical clinic in Oregon devoted to African American health. Why is this so important to us? African American residents of Multnomah County suffer from health disparities which place them and their families at risk. When high blood pressure and diabetes are left untreated, complications such as heart disease and stroke can devastate families and cause a downward economic spiral. We believe these health inequities can - and must - be eliminated.
