When addressing parents and their children, it is absolutely imperative that you first ask what their pronouns are.

This can be as simple as adding the question on the intake form or just asking.

Here I am, breastfeeding my first baby, and here she is, *so* grown up. What surprised me the most about breastfeeding is what a warrior I turned out to be. I’d never considered myself a particularly dedicated or strong person until I became a mother. Breastfeeding was awful in the first couple of weeks - super painful and I was having anxiety attacks at all hunger cues. I decided to pump and bottle-feed her - this was a LOT of work. I pumped every three hours, around the clock, for four months - when we finally figured out the latch and she breastfed until she was 14 mos old. This picture was taken just a couple of days after I’d happily thrown my pump into the back of a closet where it lived until I went back to work with my second. Looking back, it didn’t feel like work then. It felt like something I was born to do. My strength and persistence surprised me and I think the confidence I gained changed me at my core. I see this same persistence every day in the families I work with and it makes me feel like the luckiest!

One of the biggest things that surprises a lot of families is that breastfeeding doesn’t just end when the baby turns 1! And I’m happy it doesn’t because pictures of breastfeeding toddlers are my favorite. 🤸‍♀️ 🚗

So many surprises with breastfeeding but the one I hear the most is how much more difficult things were at the beginning, but how much better they got. This determined mother of two said this:
“And I’d say the thing that surprised me the most was how challenging it was at the beginning but then how easy and enjoyable it got after the initial steep learning curve. I’m so glad I stuck with it. You were a big help w Marin! Oh, it also surprised me how thirsty I was all the time.😂”

When I asked this determined Mama about what surprised her the most about breastfeeding, her answer was too beautiful and complete for just an Instagram post, so I created a blog post to highlight her story. She and her partner have worked so hard to make breastfeeding work for their family, Baby M is so lucky to have them!

This sweet mama of 2 shares her thoughts on what was unexpected when breastfeeding her second: “I was surprised by how much more interested my two year old became in breastfeeding when the new baby arrived. He actually refused to eat solid foods and nursed almost every time the baby did the first few days, so we had to make a few rules about when and how much boobie he can have. I didn't expect to have to limit feeding, but boundaries have been a lifesaver and have made the experience much calmer and sweeter for all of us!”

Disgusted? Yes. Surprised? Nope.

A report says the issue arose at the United Nations World Health Assembly in Geneva
