Stay strong, y’all.

P.S. This is after I hit a new 5-rep max deadlifting today. 54 kg = 119 pounds. That’s what you see here.

It’s been a minute (actually, many) since I’ve gone to the woods to harvest Oregon grape. Sunday was the first time in a long time, and it was such a reminder of how making medicine is medicine.

I took the day to head out to my own personal secret spot, one that I had identified rather than one a friend shared with me. As I drove into the woods, I felt my heart opening in a way that just doesn’t happen in the city. It just sort of… relaxed.

I use Oregon grape for many things in my practice. It’s a terrific bitter, supporting digestion. It’s antimicrobial, which means it’s great if your food is kind of sketchy or you’ve got some kind of infection trying to take hold.

I also came upon research suggesting that one of its medicinal compounds can be very helpful for improving mood. And that has certainly been my personal experience using it.

When I got home and started processing my roots, I was hit by that Oregon grape smell. And my response was completely Pavlovian: Oregon grape makes me happy.

It makes me happy because I’ve been to the woods.

It makes me happy because I am working with a beloved native plant.

It makes me happy because it reminds me of my sense of place in my sense of purpose.

It makes me happy because it’s made me feel so much better in the past.

And it makes me happy maybe through some more mechanistic mechanisms, too.

The first time I heard David Hoffman speak, he said herbalist don’t burn out because the plants feed us back. To which I can only say these many years later, yup.

I snapped this shot of NYC street art in early October, 2023. Its presence immediately turned out to be prescient — and it’s a reminder we sorely need right now.

I have no way of knowing exactly what the artist(s) intended. But to me, it’s about staying strong for the fight.

So to be clear, when I say “protect your heart” I don’t mean “hide your heart.”

I do mean take the actions you can to keep your heart whole, because you, whole, are needed to make it through these times.

In this sense, protecting your heart can look like taking doomscroll breaks, finding beauty, seeking joy.

It can look like herbs that support the emotional and physical heart. (Looking at you, hawthorn!)

It can look like spending time with friends, family, community.

It can look like asking for and offering hugs.

It can look like any self care you can manage that helps you stay present and strong — good sleep and a high-protein breakfast are two examples.

Please, stay with us. The fight will find even those who hide. And we are stronger together.

Clearing out my drafts to share some beauty with y’all in these terrible times. In case you’re not familiar, this plant has thorns.

I woke up at 3 AM to address a biological function, and walked outside into a the view of a space telescope.

It had been raining pretty hard when I went to bed. I really didn’t expect to see anything, I just happened to look up.

I’m so grateful that I got to see the first super moon of 2026 with my own eyes. It was not only magical, but a great reminder that the magic does keep happening despite the foolishness of humans.

This real is a combination of still photos and video. You should know that the video is all real time, not time lapse. The wind was pushing the clouds that fast.

I hope you enjoy a few minutes outside of the madness.
