“When relaxation develops in us, through letting go of neurosis and experiencing some sense of space and cool fresh air around us, we begin to feel good about ourselves. We feel that our existence is worthwhile. In turn we feel that our communication with others could also be worthwhile and pure and good. On the whole we begin to feel that we are not cheating anybody; we are not making anything up on the spot. We begin to feel that we are fully genuine. From that point of view, one of the basic principles of a work of art is the absence of lying. Genuine art tells the truth.“ - Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (from “Dharma Art” Seminar 1979)

Sitting’s not easy (if it is you might not be doing it right). It’s been at times one of the simplest and hardest things to do in my life. Holding your mind and holding your seat with a world on fire isn’t easy (if it is you might not be doing it right). Practice helps. People help. Purpose helps. Maybe we can find those things together.

Come sit and share with us this Saturday 3/7/26 (and every other Saturday) 1:30 to 3:30 - come when you can, leave as you need, be as you are:

1:30 Settle in, tea, socialize
2:00 Buddhist Mindful Awareness Practice (Shamatha Vipashyana)
2:30: Discussion Practice (Social Meditation)

Know any good Black and brown men in Maine looking for some support and community? Please check out this new offering in collaboration with .brave:

MONTHLY BIPOC MEN’S GROUP
In need of community with other men? Come join our Monthly BIPOC Men’s Group. It’s rare for men to have space to talk openly about all they’re dealing with. In collaboration with Collectively Brave, this space will be hosted by Roland Mendiola, a community member and local psychologist (though this is NOT a therapy group).

This is a community support group for male/masculine-identified persons for the purposes of providing a safe, supportive, and confidential space to discuss issues related to men’s identity, including but not limited to:

Relationships, Work, Self-Care, Community, Politics, Meaning and Purpose, Family, Culture, Identity, S*x and S*xuality, Grief and Loss, and Health and Aging.

This group is held for BIPOC men to surround themselves by other BIPOC men and simply BE. Whether you’re looking to unwind and relax, find new friends, seek help, or offer listening and support to others, you are welcome here as you are.

First Meeting: Saturday February 21st
Time: 10am - 12pm
Location: Martin’s Point Community Center
153 US-1, Scarborough, ME 04074
For more info and questions, contact Roland at 720-252-4060 or 13mendiola@gmail.com

About 10 years ago I started compiling this list of qualities, attributes, and behaviors that I equated with being culturally conscious and competent as well as being a strong and active ally and advocate - trying to answer the question: What exactly do I want to see in myself and in others? I wasn’t able to find a questionnaire that existed that captured what this all meant to me or reflected how I’ve been trained and trained educated - so I started making my own based on a variety of sources (and some based on what made sense to me) for however it was useful.

I’m simply sharing in case it’s helpful to you or perhaps generates some important reflection and dialogue. I’m completely open to any feedback or suggestions of what you might change or add (or other similar resources you recommend). May we keep growing and learning in community and society.

“Buddhism is not a very popular teaching at all. It is popular to a certain degree where it satisfies the intellectual mind looking for something that is glitzy. But, after a while the glitziness of the dharma fades, and then you begin to find out a lot more has to be done about your self. It’s not about belonging to a group. It’s not about feeling good for a moment or a weekend. There are certainly no Christmases to celebrate—and, I believe, no Adam and Eve to blame for original sin. It all falls on the individual self. The whole beauty of Buddhism falls down to it becoming a very practical approach of working with your own self—and that’s not a popular thing to do.” — Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche

There’s love. Amidst the chaos and the grief and the rage and the fear and the worry and the heartbreak. There’s love, in this moment. I keep trying to tell myself, I keep trying to feel into. This gathering is just a simple and humble offering to center our felt experience - ALL OF IT - as well as the self-interrogation of who and what and how and where and when and why I am as I’m meeting this moment in relation to others and to this world.

What’s true and real for you? If you need a space to sit quietly with it, to feel into it in community, and even to speak about it and try to grapple with what’s happening in our world(s), you are most welcome here - we want to hear your voice AND this space centers marginalized and oppressed voices in particular. I’ll be here and keeping the fire going, this Saturday 1/24/26🔥
