Over the past weekend Coach Ty completed the USA Weightlifting Level 1 certification.

This course broke down the finer points of powerful lifts including the sn**ch and the clean and jerk. This course provided skills and drills that will benefit the programming and coaching of the Olympic lifts at the gym.

Additionally, as a physical therapist, Tyler is able to integrate this content in his practice to help both experienced weightlifters as well as anyone interesting in learning more about the nuance of these movements.

Thanks Coach Ty for continuing to be a learner, our Woodslawn community and your patients are super fortunate!

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11 AM, some of our favorite members fill the gym.

This group of 65+ athletes train for all the right reasons: to stay strong, move confidently, and remain independent. Their sessions focus on balance, mobility, and strength training. Exactly the ingredients that keep them doing the things they love, from hiking and gardening to carrying grandkids and traveling.

Added bonus, these legendary legends don’t just train together, they hang out together. After class, you’ll often find them chatting, celebrating birthdays with cupcakes for fellow athletes or coaches, and keeping one of the most amazing social circles in the gym

You know who’s proud of you?
👉 This sweet gym pup. And us, your coaches!

Why?
Because working out 3–5 days a week is something only about 24% of U.S. adults do. That’s A + territory. Seriously, you’ve built an amazing habit.

Now for the hard truth (doggy ears perk up here):
If you’re not paying attention to nutrition, your results are going to take way longer and feel way harder than they need to.

Start simple:
🥩 Add 10 grams of protein to each meal.
📝 Do a little napkin tracking this week. Nothing serious, just jot things down.
🍗 Then add one or two more bites of protein next time.

Small changes. Big results.

Our bright spot board was filled with MASSIVE PR's from this past Wednesdays front squat retest in our CrossFit class!

Now, before you say, “But I didn’t hit a new number,” let’s pause for a reality check.

❓Did you squat deeper?

❓Finally feel like your front rack isn’t trying to choke you out?

❓Show up to all the classes you planned this week?

Well hooray for you! Those are PRs too!!

Everyones barriers and goals are different. That’s exactly why we push Goal Reviews. Because what gets measured, gets improved and sometimes, the win isn’t a heavier barbell… it’s as simple as not skipping the gym two days in a row!

One of the most valuable things we talk about during goal reviews, especially for our group program, is how to make group training specific to your goals. We break down how and when we program, what each day’s intended stimulus looks like, and help you design a training cadence that fits your schedule and goals.

See? It’s not at all like going to the principal’s office.

Had dinner with someone the other day. We talked about all the usual stuff - life, work, family… the Patriots no longer sucking (finally).

But one theme kept popping up: how weirdly hard it is for most adults to talk about what they eat.

We’ve eaten 30,000+ meals in our lifetime, you’d think we’d have this part of adulting figured out.
Yet somehow, nutrition has become a full-time puzzle.

Is protein good?
Are carbs evil again this week?
Should we be paleo, keto, or “whatever-TikTok-says-today-o”?

Here’s my advice:
🥦 More things from the ground than from shelves.
🍗 A clearly identifiable protein at every meal.
🌾 Fiber, prioritize it, but don’t go zero to sixty overnight (you’ve been warned).
🏈 If you need a little help navigating the nutrition confusion, we’ve got you.
I promise, our advice is a lot better than calling a goal-line pass when the run game’s working.
If you need a bit more help navigating the nutrition confusion we are here.

Welcome Berdine!

Berdine just wrapped up her small group PT On-Ramp with Coach Chase and is much more confident with the strength training movements she will use in our program.

From Coaches Chase and Jonathan:

“Berdine is such a pleasure to coach, always focused on improving her movement and eager to keep progressing in our Small Group PT sessions.”

Welcome to the Woodslawn Berdine! We are super excited you're here!

Small Group PT- Our Next 8-Week Strength Focus

Our Small Group PT program just got even more flexible with even more options! Whether you’re pairing it with your CrossFit classes or using it as your main strength track, the next 8 weeks are all about building lean muscle, refining movement patterns and getting stronger where it matters most.

Here’s a quick look at what’s ahead:

Evening Track (Mon–Thurs 4 & 5:15, now with 3 PM option T/Th) — Heavy hinge work on Mondays, squat and accessory focus midweek, and bench press + lower body accessory on Thursdays.

Midday Track (7 AM, 8:45 AM, 1 PM) — Early week isolates the glutes and midline; late week brings upper body strength and stability.

Early AM Track (5–8 AM) — Tempo back squats early in the week, single-leg strength and upper body development later.

Saturday 9:30 AM — Our “hybrid” session: more movement, single-leg and single-arm work, extra midline volume… and yes, a little more sweat.

If you’ve been wanting a little more direction or dedication in your lifting our small group PT is the program for you!

Hit us with your questions or to secure a spot in this limited availability program by sending us DM or connecting with a coach!

Be like Betsy!

Betsy is the second-longest tenured member at Woodslawn. Known for her smile, her infectious laugh, and for having a cooldown named after her: the “Betsy Walk.”

To Dan’s recollection (which may be a little foggy), Betsy’s very first goal was to be able to lift her suitcase into the overhead compartment during her retirement travels.

Fast forward to today and Betsy has become a Woodslawn icon.
She started with zero strength training experience and no consistent fitness plan. Now, she’s a staple in our daily CrossFit classes, modifying movements when needed but always maintaining the intended stimulus with the help of her coaches.

Betsy is living proof that it’s never too late to start.

Coach Jonathan is already putting his recent continuing education from PPSC into action. And to no ones surprise, the feedback has been awesome.

Athletes in his small group PT sessions said they felt more warmed up, more activated, and sweating sooner before transitioning into their main movements- increasing their potential to lift more while lowering the risk of injury or pain from dysfunctional movement.

At Woodslawn, we take pride in the details from monthly equipment maintenance and daily cleaning (thank you, Sam!) to the systems and operations that keep communication clear and responses quick.

But what we’re most proud of is our investment in our coaches and their growth.
Through our monthly coaches development sessions and each coach’s pursuit of additional education, we’re constantly working to bring you the highest quality coaching and standards possible.

So this week, take a moment to thank a coach. Their dedication to their craft is a huge part of what makes Woodslawn so special.
